Adjusting drive belt

I am trying to adjust the drive belt on my progress 2G pillar drill. The motor is held on two steel bars that should slide in the main housing. Mine appears to be stuck, I have undone the two locking bolts but I am afraid to put any force on it in case there is something else holding it that I have missed.

Try giving the motor a good shaking. It is possible that the belt tension has slightly twisted the motor on the rods.

(Probably a little squirt of WD40, or a spot of oil on each rod, followed by a five minute wait for it to wick its way in, may help)

If all else fails, a tap with a hide mallet, in the "slacken direction, t MIGHT just shake it loose.

Once loose, it may be worth checking that the locking screws have not raised a burr on the rod, which are causing the jam up

Your drill is telling you that its time for the mechanical equivalent of a spa, sauna and pamper day! Put the do not disturb sign up for a few hours pull the motor off, free up the sliding rods, clean up as required, lubricate and get them running nicely. Then do the same for all the other similarly moving parts on the drill. Check the spindle bearings whlist you are at it. I know they last for ages but they do wear eventually especially if lubrication is neglected or a passage gunked up.

Reassemble and enjoy your "new" drill. Its surprising how you get used to slow detrioration over time as oils and grease harden whilst fine shop dust works its way in to take up the tiny clearances essential to lubrication and free movement.

Well tried WD40 , tried pulling ,levering , even a tap with a mallet, still would not budge. My drive belt was only a little slack so I have fixed this by placing four washers on motor fixing studs between motor and drill. Bit of a bodge I know but it has taken up the slack on the belt. Anyone know the oil capacity of the gearbox. Just poured in 150 ml but still no sign of it in the oil level window.

I had oil troubles (I thought) with my new lathe, couldn't see the oil level in the sight glass, so put in some more, it over flowed. The oil sumps had been over filled at the factory, so I had to drain it out again until it showed the right level. Ian S C
