I bought an old clarke metalworker drill press sans motor but otherwise looks fine over the weekend with the intention of converting it to a tapping stand

I had a geared motor 400rpm that i was going to put on and use it with a tapmatic head for tapping dutys rather than swapping out on pillar drill

Trying to get the chuck out however..one last tap with the lump hammer on the drift and

MM aren't too bad for spares, usually, but i have no idea.

Sometimes they say to contact Clarke direct for spares. May be a bit cheaper (even though the two companies are closely related.

Something I will take note of. I have one that needs a chuck change and it has never been out.

Looks like something that extracted and clamped round the spindle would be a good idea as I would guess that side forces from the hammer broke it. Might be possible to use some sort of clamp on it and a shortened drift that doesn't go all the way through.

Clarke international have just replied with a price of £24 all in delivered so not too bad

I had removed the spindle and it was on the vice drifting from the top so it was purely end force with the tapers pushing....I imagine that the chuck had never been out before and it may be rusted solid

Mmmmm it's worth noting that clarks will supply spares like that. It could influence buying decisions. I'm inclined to not rate them.

Clarke are actually very good on spares, and their guys know what they are talking about.

Their main market are contractors, not engineers, people who expect to be able to ring up and get a part ASAP so they can finish a job.
