Is there any reason why I shouldn't make eccentric straps out of bronze plate instead of gunmetal castings? I have a decent sized piece of bronze plate of appropriate thickness that will unlikely ever be used for anything else. Unfortunately I cannot be more specific as to what type of bronze it is other than to state the obvious that it is less copper coloured than gunmetal but more copper coloured than brass! Loco is Titfield Thunderbolt in 3.5" gauge.

I've done it in the past with bronze when making engines to my own design where castings are not available but mostly use a slice from a suitably sized bit of cast iron bar for eccentrics

Just had another look at them. They are actually turned from a piece of bar. I have two pieces about 5" diameter.

Bronze will be superior to gunmetal castings. Bulleid refered to eccentric straps as 'disc brakes'!

cheers,

Ah, a Titbolt Thunderfield, a wonderful little locomotive.

A piece of bronze is always a better bet than a gunmetal casting which inevitably seem to stretch after a period of use, better still cast iron straps running on steel eccentrics. A good friend of mine always referred to eccentric straps as band brakes!
