I am almost at the point of starting to consider the paint for my Mamod / Wilesco traction engine rebuild (hardly any of the original left just the wheels and Wilesco engine)

I have already painted the fire box (externally fired ceramic gas burner pot boiler) and smokebox with Halfords high temp satin black, I have been advised that Halfords acrylic spray tins paint will go soft and tacky at 100°C - the boiler will have a cladding sheet and the tender is of course fixed to the rear of the firebox and this is where I was going to use the Acrylic car paint.

What experience has anyone got, in the past well, 18 years ago I used holts cellulose paint which is now no longer available which worked well on a Roundhouse Lady Anne

John..... I am about to start painting a live steam Gauge 1 loco. I did some research on suitable paint and boiled it down to two options. These were Precision Paints and Humbrol. I shall be using Humbrol, not least because it is easy to get hold of and does not require specialist thinners.

Hi John

All my locos are painted in cellulose which you can still buy in solid colours from any car paint suppliers, I always put a thin coat of etching primer on leave for 24 hours and paint no problems with heat and dries fast
