If at all possible gauge and pump should be separately connected to item under test.

If a single connection point is used, there is always the possibility that (due to a blockage) you are testing only the piping and gauge, not the boiler itself.

Ok that makes sense, is there a picture or sketch somewhere I can view

I need some help, I am in the process of building another small boiler for a traction engine and need to test this myself, if I use a hand pump and a 2" pressure gauge with a maximum callibration of 300psi how should the pipework run from the pump via the gauge to the boiler fitting should the gauge be teed off from the main pipe run

Thread: Painting Live Steam Loco's

Hi John

All my locos are painted in cellulose which you can still buy in solid colours from any car paint suppliers, I always put a thin coat of etching primer on leave for 24 hours and paint no problems with heat and dries fast

Stan

Are they available in spray cans?

19/11/2014 06:07:54

Any clues anyone what make of paint to go for, how about Humbrol Enamel?

17/11/2014 19:00:10

I am almost at the point of starting to consider the paint for my Mamod / Wilesco traction engine rebuild (hardly any of the original left just the wheels and Wilesco engine)

I have already painted the fire box (externally fired ceramic gas burner pot boiler) and smokebox with Halfords high temp satin black, I have been advised that Halfords acrylic spray tins paint will go soft and tacky at 100°C - the boiler will have a cladding sheet and the tender is of course fixed to the rear of the firebox and this is where I was going to use the Acrylic car paint.

What experience has anyone got, in the past well, 18 years ago I used holts cellulose paint which is now no longer available which worked well on a Roundhouse Lady Anne

Thread: Silver Solderin
17/05/2014 22:07:09

Ok what is a few is that ?

17/05/2014 18:56:12

Have now silver soldered my first couple of parts as a trial some spare copper plumbing parts, next question I have a 50g packet of Citric Acid Monohydrate powder, I need to make up a solution to pickle the parts soldered - how much do you mix up and what proportion.

John, from the wording of your initial question etc. I take it that you are building a new boiler, and? making it from copper. Yes as Brian says It's expensive, but you don't need too much, and it's good to do the job correctly. Take note of the advise, if any metal to be silver soldered has tin lead solder on it DON"T, not at least until ALL the old solder is removed. Other wise you may as well use low temp solder, because the joint will be stronger than the contaminated one. Ian S C

I have bitten the bullet and spent money on a torch and silver solder from Cup Alloys (great firm only to ready to help) haven't got round to trying silver soldering yet but will make a couple of small parts that need silver soldering so will see how it goes.

Thread: Pressure Gauges
27/02/2014 22:34:04

I may have resolved this contacted Acme Engineering Mike Ousby who is looking into this.

25/02/2014 21:09:35

I am on the hunt for a 1/2" pressure gauge marked up for 20psi I also need a safety valve set at 20psi for my traction engine build,

where can I get these from?

Thread: Traction engine clack & injectors
13/01/2014 22:42:48

Wondered if anyone can help me - I need to make a pattern for a dummy Traction engine clack valve & injectors to use on my Mamod rebuild, trouble is its isn't rally season and I don't know anyone round here who has an engine I can measure up (I live in Paignton S Devon).

Does anyone have a set of drawings for said items they could scan across please?

Hi John ,

No point in repeating advice given many times before on the actual process so just a related thought :

You don't say where you live but if its in mainland UK there is very likely to be someone in your vicinity that will give you a first hand demo of silver soldering and perhaps let you use their equipment .

You won't get much help from most clubs but there are plenty of lone hands out there ( including me ) that would be more than willing to help with silver soldering or indeed any workshop problems .

Keep your actual address to yourself but let us know the district and see if anyone volunteers .

Regards ,

MikeW

Hello Mike

I live in South Devon in Paignton, anyone out there who can help?

I need some help please, I am in the process of building a boiler for my Wilesco Traction engine rebuild and want to silver solder this together, the originals are all soft soldered but I am wary of this particularly when I start adding in various blanks for mounting parts that if the boiler is soft soldered then it may well fail on some of the joints.

I have soft soldered and whitemetal soldered for the last 35 years so not afraid to try something new, my question is what type of torch do i need and where can these be obtained from, what do most use for gas bottles ...

I have looked up a number of you tube tutorials and will pick up silver solder Easy Flo No2 and flux from EKP.

Thread: Boiler Fittings
27/12/2013 17:43:11

Looks like it could solve the problem, any ideas what the dimensions are as nothing is shown.

27/12/2013 17:06:02

I am on the hunt for a inline regulator valve that I can fit an arm to for my Wilesco traction engine modification, this needs to take 1/8" pipework, where can I obtain one please.

All I can find are globe valves that are screw down with a hand wheel, not quite what I have in mind, I have a felling that there may be something that steam boat builders use but don't know who supplies these.
