My original Myford ML10 was a fairly early one - No. V111034 - and it has the type of topslide mount which will fit in the long crosslide you have been supplied with - i.e. angled stub on underside of topslide which is locked by two shaped pins in the crosslide tightened by square headed screws. I purchased a replacement long crosslide from Myford a few years ago and it was a straight swap with the original crosslide fitted to my lathe.
However, I had a look in the "Myford ML10 Lathe Manual" by Ian Bradley, published in 1970, shortly after the lathe appeared on the scene and on Page 24 the topslide details shown are exactly the same as yours. So it looks as though the very first ;lathes had your arrangement which was then changed by the time I bought mine in 1973

Just as an afterthought, but I wonder if the Super7 topslide base will be compatible with your topslide and the replacement crosslide to give you a way out of the problem. Maybe someone with a Super7 could measure the slide dimensions to see if they are the same as your ML10 ones. http://www.myford.co.uk/acatalog/K24.-TOP-SLIDE-BASE--A2076-678.html If not, a complete Super7 topslide assembly might be a way out, but a bit expensive.

17 forum posts 27 photos | Hi Jim, Thank you for your input and I agree with you entirely. I am awaiting a reply from RDG Myfords on the subject, but thought it might be wise to seek some advice on the forum. I will post a thread when I get a definite answer to this problem.

17 forum posts 27 photos | Would anybody be willing to let me have the dimensions of the swivel base which holds the top slide to the cross slide on a Super 7 for me to compare whether it will fit my ML10 please.

What a well kitted out ML10 and it looks in excellent condition. I do like the large hand wheel on the saddle - a much better option than the standard ball handle supplied on mine. One thought I had about using the Super7 base is that the tool seat might be raised since the centre height of the Super7 is higher than the ML10.

John Another worthwhile mod I made to my machine was tumbler reverse. Whilst its normal function in screw cutting was not used all that often the ability to disconnect the gears was. I purchased a kit of parts to do this but I'm afraid I don't remember where now. Here is a pic just a small cut-out to the guard needed. You will see that I also made a leadscrew clutch - a very good mod ! I hope you enjoy your machine as much as I enjoyed mine. Regards Norman |

17 forum posts 27 photos | Hi Jim, Glad you like it so far. The ball handle on the saddle had to go I'm afraid, but then these machines were made at a lower budget years ago to make them more affordable and they do offer potential to bring them up to ones own standard,do they not. I do agree with you on the height change using the Super 7 swivel base but then it could be possible that the ML10 top slide may just be smaller in height than the Super 7.I really need to find this information. 17 forum posts 27 photos | Hi Norman, I do like the idea of a tumbler reverse and you appear to have made an excellent and neat job of yours. Also the leadscrew clutch is a must and I was fortunate enough to have one already fitted on mine when I purchased it some years ago.( Wouldn't be without it ) John. |

1504 forum posts 142 photos | John, I did this quick sketch of an old topslide base on the back of an envelope. Measurements with a digital caliper. Don't forget to allow for the gib strip. If you want the base to try then drop me a line (PM).

17 forum posts 27 photos | Just checked the measurements. Top dovetail for my top slide is 37.5mm base is 28mm. My cross slide bore is 35.0mm. My height from top of cross slide to top of top slide base is 21.5mm. Thank you for your input anyway, at least I now know that the Super 7 top slide base is not compatible and so the search for the correct one continues. John.
