![]() 6956 forum posts 229 photos | People have different attitudes and relationships with forums. Very few of my fellow club members look at this or other forums every month. Several of my threads specifically about club activities have had little response showing that probably most (ie 90%) of UK clubs do not have a single person posting on this forum. Perhaps also reflecting that only a handful of people in each club subscribe to the magazines. With no magazine or internet interest they live happily in a communication dead zone. Over say the past year a couple of people have shown what I think is an odd attitude. One posted a question needing at least a reasonable amount of expertise to answer and about two hours later they hadn't had a reply so petulantly posted saying nobody was interestied in helping as if everyone just sits there looking at the forum all day long. Most of the regulars are just a bunch of 'friends' who happen to meet on line rather than the pub and with a couple of exceptions make such slow progress on multiple projects there isn't much to put on display. |

ME editor is as quiet as a church mouse. This forum is dominated by MEW topics. A forum for ME and one for MEW would make life simpler. As another member posted, he has taken his loco build to MECH forum - reason given was lack of interest on here.
This forum's strength is that it doesn't restrict posts to a narrow range of interests. I've been a member of ones that do, and still look in on others. They often have little traffic, or the same job is repeated over and over. Keeping them going is almost as hard work as reading them. It's like watching Youtube videos where every cut is shown in real time; necessary for a beginner's tutorial, but excruciating for anyone else. |

7227 forum posts 21 photos | Bear in mind that this Forum has thousands of readers and posters across the world. And they are all different in their reasons for being on here. There is a vast range of interests. Not all will interest everyone. Some posts will probably frighten / bore other readers. Wouldbe Newbies, seeking advice on what machine to buy. Ditto asking what would be suiutable to achieve their dream outcome. Newbies seeking advice on machining. Experienced Loco Builkders Experienced Road Engine builders Experienced Steam Engine Builders. Experienced IC Engine builders Horologists (Clock and Watch ) Tool makers and repairers Machine refurbishers / repairers. I am not skilled or patient enough to be a maker of models, clocks or IC engines. Which is why MEW is my choice rather than ME. The repairs and refurbishment of machines, sometimes astonish me.. I admire the skill and courage involved, and the patience. Some posts ARE just annoying / needlessly rude. We can do without them. Hopefully, the Moderators either take them to task or just exile them. We are all different, and it is a fact of life that you can't satisfy ALL the people ALL the time. Pass on the items that don't appeal, (If you read them, strangely, you may learn something! ) enjoy the ones that do, and live and let live. Machine rather than moan! Maybe this is where a like button would come in handy, the people that do post their builds can often be left thinking they are talking to themselves if there is no or very little response, at least a few clicks of a like or similar button would encourage them to carry on. Exactly! It's one reason I continue my build diary on TT but rarely here or on MEM. It takes time and effort to create a build post so I concentrate that effort where I get feedback and, more importantly, useful discussion. It's strange that the OP only has 3 photos to his name, none of which seem to be visible? Andrew |

Quote: More threads and photos on a what are you making theme I would welcome. As you are also on the MECH forum then I'm sure you are aware of my own build which has been detailed (many hundreds of photos) there since 2010 and still has some years to go. I am relatively new to the ME forum and thus haven't given details of my build here. I already post to 3 forums and FB and have my own fully detailed blog which takes up a lot of my time doing the write-ups. However the ME hasn't been forgotten and my build is now (since 1st Jan) serialised in the ME mag, the articles won't have the full content for obvious reasons but so far the editorial team are doing a great job.

I didn't think you were referring to me, sorry for the misunderstanding. My build is 'Doncaster' rarely off the first page.
Ps: I have the same avatar there as here... Kind regards

Actually, you may find my blog easier to navigate, it has much more detail including my research and probably of more interest.

This forum's strength is that it doesn't restrict posts to a narrow range of interests. I couldn't have put it better myself. I take MEW but not ME. I am not a model maker, and hot fog has never floated my boat, but I learn a huge amount from the assembled wisdom, experience and discussion on this forum. I read modelling posts because there are so many things to learn from them, but have limited enthusiasm for other forums which only deal with model making. Another strength of this forum is that there is enough activity to keep it always worth coming back to. Keep it up, people. George B. |

"I suppose that is one of the things with this site covering Model Engineer as well as Model Engineer's workshop as it covers a much more diverse subject matter." Is the "Model Engineer's workshop" another forum as well as another magazine? Regards,
James. No. And that's where the confusion can creep in. This forum is called Model Engineer but covers both magazines. As it works out, much of the forum content relates to the "Engineers Workshop" part rather than the "Model" part. That is why there are many threads on machine tools, both the choice and restoration thereof, and workshop practices in general. There are plenty of prolific model builders on here but also plenty of restorers of old cars, bikes, trains, steam engines, ships and the like along with tinkerers in general. Thank you. That explains why I could not find it. |

744 forum posts 375 photos | I must admit I was quite surprised how few comments I had on my Resurrecting a Stuart 10V. Having said that the comments I did receive were extremely helpful. In turned in to much more of a basket case that I expected but came out very well in the end after major surgery to the cylinder. Well major surgery as far as I was concerned maybe not to others.
