Strictly speaking he can make 500ml of fizzy drink. 480ml of lime/lemonade mix and 20ml of straight lemonade. ... I.. Actually as it's cooking not maths the right answer is use it all, it's close enough for my kitchen! Isn't assuming the question is about the example a classic 'common sense' mistake? Surely unlikely in practice that a maths question featuring ratios is actually about making Lemonade. Or that the examiner will reward a joke. No. Exams seek to sort the wheat from the chaff. You're chaff if you can't do the sum, and you're chaff if you don't understand the point of the question! Smart-a**e answers to maths questions only get applauded in pubs and on internet forums. Elsewhere, you is toast! Don't ask how I know... Dave

![]() 963 forum posts 2 photos | A more practical question (for an aeromodeller) that I have sometimes seen published goes along the line like this: "I have 5L of 25% nitro (nitromethane) model car glow engine fuel and want to dilute the nitro to 10% to suit my XYZ model aircraft engine. I have the correct oil and methanol. So how much of each do I need to add and how much fuel would I end up with?" * Danny M * Oops! fForgot to mention that the oil is15% of the mix

Dave Sadly as someone who has marked public examinations for over 25 years, answers of these types do happen, either because the candidate doesn't know they are being smart, or often when it appears they have no interest in completing the exam in a sensible fashion. it would be unprofessional to give any actual examples from public exams, except to say that every exam board has a procedure in place for abusive, unacceptable and offensive responses as well as to deal with any disclosures made of criminal activity.

In the radio HAM exam . One question with 3 answers was , what are parasitic oscilation's. Answer 1 was ,little bugs that eat your aerial. Steve. Ha ha - and one likely only needed more than 50% to attain the pass grade?🙂 The local college was doing a two term course, leading to the exam at the end. I enrolled, didn’t do the course and got a distinction in the exam. All ‘multiple guess’ questions and most with one clearly inappropriate answer. C & G courses were more a measure of one’s ability to work the system, not to learn a subject, IMO. |
