[ ... ] In Apple's case, however, the crux of the complaint was not that their batteries underwent a scarcely avoidable reduction in performance over time but that the company incorporated in their phones an automatic CPU slowdown in response to reduced battery performance yet did not communicate the fact that they had done this to users. The deliberate and unexplained slowing down by Apple of CPUs will inevitably have led some users to think, “my phone is slow so I should replace it” not, “my phone is slow so I should replace its battery”. [ ... ] . I agree completely, Bill But ... Does that qualify as 'planned obsolescence' or quite the opposite ? MichaelG. I think only Apple themselves know beyond all doubt the answer to that question, Michael. |

![]() 1376 forum posts 10 photos | Personally, I don't want a company to sabotage/degrade my product without consulting me first. Rechargeable battery life is wholly dependent on the number of recharge cycles it's enjoyed in its lifetime and at what state of charge the battery was in when it was recharged. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. |

612 forum posts 174 photos | I use my Mac Book Air mainly for photo and video work plus Cad Cam and Fusion 360 and am receiving the same message as Dr Dave. As I understand it Auto Desk need to use a higher version of the MAC OS than my Mac book is capable of upgrading to because of limitations with memory etc. I have had three Microsoft Windows OS. laptops in the time that I have owned this mac (Purchased in mid 2011) and it is still going strong, having been used on a daily basis since then. The Microsoft OS laptops are in comparison hardly used, being kept only to run other software that will run only with Windows. I have become fairly dependent on Fusion 360 so today I bit the bullet and have purchased a new Mac Book that will support the latest OS.Admitedly the Apple is expensive but have proved to be very reliable and I feel I have had my moneys worth from my old one so in a way don't begrudge having to upgrade. |

Of course, though you may own your computer hardware, you only license the software (usually), so if the provider wants to update it online you may have no legal option to refuse! I've got a Sony Vaio laptop (Windows) that's 12 years old, still going strong with fifteen year old versions of Photoshop, video editing, CAD, Office and music editing software on it, still working and still doing what I want it to do. The secret is it's not connected to the internet in any form. The battery is starting to show signs of being a little tired but I have the computer plugged in pretty much permanently on its mains charger. In fact it's the keyboard that's starting to play up as some of the more commonly used keys you have to press quite hard. I want to see the software manufacturers legally oblige me to make me update their software. Another bonus is I don't get bombarded with messages every other day encouraging me to download the latest version of XYZ for no reason. Edited By Chris Trice on 05/01/2019 12:39:58 |
