First post (hope I am doing this correctly!

I am building the Bengs Sophie and struggling with the lack of information regarding the cylinder assembly..

i cant work out how part no. 11 (which is not named) , part no. 12 which is the slide Valve and part no. 13 which is also not named all fit together..

I assume that part 11 is soldered to the cylinder sleeve and part 13 is screwed to part 12 the slide valve, but i cant see how the slide valve is fixed to part 11?

What confuses me is that part 11 is also drilled and tapped like the slide valve to fit part 13 and i cant see why

Any advice would be GRATEFULLY received

Regards Garry

Garry, this is not a very common model in the UK where most of our members are from so it would help if you could post a photo of the part of the drawing that shows these items and then we may be able to help.

Details of how to post photos here

Thanks for the response Jason, its nice to know that there is a community out there that may be able to help.

I have posted four photos showing the information that i have, as you can see there is not much. I am a retired qualified engineer and like to think i know my way around drawings and instructions but there is not enough for me to work this out. This is the first model steam engine that i have tried to build and it was supposed to be the easy one as i have an Allchin Royal Chester Traction Engine that i bought (part built) waiting in the wings. Getting very nervous about this one now.

Regards Garry

As you say Part 11 which I would term the "port face" is soldered onto the cylinder.

Part 12 would be better off named the "valve chest"

Part 13 I would call the "valve chest cover"

Parts 12 and 13 have the six clearance holes to allow then to be fixed into the matching six threaded holes in part 11 with screws, bolts or studs and nuts.

Part 14 is soldered to the top of the valve chest part 12 and acts to guide the flat rods that run up either side of the valve chest.

Part 15 looks to be the gland that solders into the valve chest (flat side) cover for the in coming steam/air.

Part 16 can be soldered or retained with loctite into the bottom of the valve chest part 12 to close that off.

The actual valve is likely to be on the next drawing and will be a cylindrical shape with a reduced diameter in the middle to fit the reamed hole in part 12 this would be termed a bobbin, spool or piston valve. This will have a hole for the valve rod and depending how they provide adjustment may be clearance or threaded, though could just be a solid part in the form of the long valve rod with two larger diameter "rings" at one end to form the bobbin.

Hope that helps, any more queries just ask or if you want a sketch of how it goes together that may be easier to visualise.
