Yes I do have a WM14, sorry I should have put that on my first post.

I've had trouble before by being too ambitious with a slitting saw. The gears survived but the motor was totally destroyed.

I don’t have a loose, worn or oily belt on my lathe but it has slipped on occasion when I’ve pushed the machine too hard. This has saved any damage to the machine and I’m glad of the feature in spite of what others may think.

Re Slitting Saws, hope that no one fits a key when using one! That is courting trouble. I once saw a slitting saw shatter because it had been keyed to the spindle. Fortunately, I had just walked past, so the debris flew behind me.

With friction drive, if it jams, it slips, but does not shatter. You back off, and return to the cut with a little less gusto.

embarrassed

I wonder why manufacturers go to the bother and expense of providing a keyway if one is not supposed to use it?

I normally run slitting saws under power feed, so not much scope for backing off; just be sure to get the feedrate right in the first place.
