Reading through the last few messages regarding the wobbling effect I do now recall that after uploading onto YouTube an option to activate the "steadying software" was accepted and in hindsight I think that this was a bad move as the original has no visible wobble, apart from the shaky human stand "me".

.

Mike,

Thanks ... You have encouraged me to have a look

Here is a short explanatory video, but there are also quite a few very negative discussions! ... First impression is it's "too clever by half" and best left alone.

Hi all,

Im currently half way thro this project and was wondering what peoples thoughts were on the fixing i should use, eg studding with nuts or hex headed bolts. Think whatever i decide i will make them from brass.

thanks.

Studs and nuts always look better and replicate the full size practice though I would go for steel myself. You can get some nice small hex steel nuts which look better than the usual mass produced items

Definitely studs and nuts, usually steel. When I say studs, I actually use cut down bolts or threaded rod rather than the correct form of stud with a plain portion. BA sizes available from EKP supplies.

Thanks very much for the replies gents. Studs n nuts it is.
I will use metric ones for this build as i dont have any BA taps and have plenty of metric ones. Probably change my mind after payday!!

thanks again.

You may find standard metric nuts a bit large but you can get smaller hex from Polly engineering or GHW in Germany, I use theirs on all my own design models which are metric.

Thanks for the help about studs n nuts guys.
im just going to start to assemble the engine to the base now so not far to go now.

does the height of the centre of the cylinder, the slide and the crank shaft have to be the same height exactly from the base. I assume they do, but drawing is vauge on this and was after a bit of valued knowledge please.

thankyou.

The cross head guide bars and the cylinder certainly need to be the same height and in line. Ideally the crankshaft bearings too but there are a few engines about with off set crankshafts, shaft should be at 90deg to cylinder ctr line.

I'm not sure what the latest drawings show but the early set I have will need some adjustment to the heights so they are all the same.

Hi folks, im about to start to assemble my parts for this engine.

Hi Gents

Only just found this thread

Mike/Jim Your engines look great it always gives me a great buzz when I see one completed and running. I'm extremely pleased that you enjoyed building it.

Jim I like how you've added the valve and governor and piped it for steam have you ever run it on steam ?. I know that one of my grasshoppers has been run on steam successfully but I've never heard of the horizontal being run on steam.

Jason is spot on regarding the use of studs and nut sizes, I just used standard M3 nuts with studs as they are easy to get. When using studs the trick is to get them all the same length the easy way to do this is to assemble the parts with two nuts then file down the stud level with the top nuts, remove the top nut and you've got the same length of stud standing proud making things look nice a neat.

As an aside I'm just completing a book for Crowood press on building this trilogy of engines, hopefully it will be out sometime this year: so keep a look out for it.

Stay Well

Stew

Hi Stew

Thanks for the comment. I like making your designs and always try to do justice to them.

I have never run any of my engines on steam; I know it would be a good thing to do but many of my earlier efforts have been assembled using adhesive where silver solder would be required for steam. Maybe one day a boiler will come to the top of the "round tuitt" list.

Just for interest here is a pic of my "Stew Hart Collection".

Wow Jim that's an impressive collection of engines nice to see it includes the popcorn engine and the over crank engine, the over crank was the first I designed and built and submitted for publishing. You must do the the Grasshopper next to complete the trilogy

Ok you've shown me yours I'll show you mine
