You might find a microscope graticule eyepiece useful Neil. 10x should have a focal length of 25mm. (250mm/X) They come in 2 sizes the smaller one will have a field of view of around 18mm or so. They tend to be a lot cheaper than astro eyepieces with them. This one is high eyepoint as well 261904055261 but the ordinary ones are ok.

I've got a cheap Bresser 20mm here which will give me a neat 9x.

I have to decide whether or not to butcher an old 50mm x 300mm scope - it has a 0.925" barrel with rack & pinion but I can bodge the eyepiece to fit. Trouble is that although the scope is an old cheapy, taking it apart shows it has a lovely coated airspaced achro doublet - it's just too long an FL for a finder. If I cut off a big chunk of the barrel it will spoil it as a 300mm scope :-/

You could just use rigid plastic plumbing pipe Neil. I'd buy a piece of tube. I would have thought there would be a metal supplier around where I think you are - near Burton on Trent?

Yes, thought of that - annoying how much I've thrown away over the years! I need a new toilet flush handle and one from the bay shows no signs of appearing so off to Wickes today..
