much as I have read the term "hit and miss", I have no idea what it is. Cheers, Martin Hi, Like you I wasn't sure how a hit and miss engine works but came across this video which explains things nicely. Peter. Edited By Peter Nichols on 17/09/2015 19:23:57 |

71 forum posts | Jason, thanks for correcting my mistake with the names - cutting and pasting is just too convenient sometimes and I seem to become blind to errors on the screen. Thanks also due to John Stevenson for sorting out the link in my earlier post. Steve

![]() 25215 forum posts 3105 photos 1 articles | I wonder if the Nemett Bobcat could be done, its a 7.5cc or 0.45cu.in. air or watercooled versions can be done. It basically a single cylinder one of these with the cylinder on top. |

1468 forum posts 3 photos | Hi Martin, You could of course copy one of the engines you already have , this will give you an idea as to the general layout required and from there you could begin to design your own engines . I would start with a two stroke as there are fewer parts and no camshaft or valvetrain to give you grief. Ian. |

68 forum posts | I have the copy of a Model Engineerng Workshop mag. with the Nemett described, mainly because I wondered if it was doable on the Peatol. I must look it up. I guess the other possibility is that I could use one of 2 Merco 61s I bought for a tenner at a dog show (!!) and use the main crankcase, but with doable additions to make it into a 4 stroke. One is good enough to simply clean and restore to use, but the other could be a suitable candidate for the extra bits, I would have to swat up on timing model engines, etc., but that's just research. I do have a liking for belt driven OHCs, so perhaps that could be designed in. I imagine none of the extras would out-do a Peatol.
Also, thanks for the info on "hit and miss" engines. I figured it was something along those lines having been mesmerised by them at steam fairs.
Cheers, Martin |

68 forum posts | Ian, we seem to have crossed posts. I think between us we might have the right course of action. I have a reasonable engineering background, having been a design modelmaker and technical illustrator for many years, jobs which put you in a position to question the work of design engineers and draughtsmen, who, (never say it!) are often in error. I'd rather enjoy the design challenges of 4 stroking a 2 stroke. Cheers, Martin |
