Thread: Learning CAD with Alibre Atom3D |
10/05/2020 14:33:45 |
Neil, Cut/Copy/Paste via mouse alone are restricted, not because of any particular desire to prevent Atom3D users having access, but simply because opening up that 'chunk' of user interface would also give access to a whole load of other things. It would require a total re-structuring of the user interface to be able to give some of the 'expected' tools in Atom3D. That won't happen short term just for Atom3D, but may happen in the longer term as part of a wider overhaul of the technology and structure of the user interface. |

Neil, 1st or 3rd angle is inherited from the drawing template - except for if you don't use templates, then Jason's instructions hold. ISO world = first angle, US = 3rd angle, unfortunately in UK we use both, so no template is likely to be 100% correct. You need to modify your template to avoid having to set it each time. In Atom3D you don't have all the editing options you might like. Projection Cone - I have a custom symbol somewhere, unfortunately Aom3D doesn't support that nice trick. Again if you modify the template, it only has to be done once... Save modified templates with their own unique name to avoid them being overwritten if re-installing the software. |

Maybe check the regional settings on whatever device you are using to access the service... |
Thread: Myford fonts |

There are at least a couple of web sites that claim to be able to identify font from an uploaded image... might be worth trying. I just searched 'identify font from image'. |
Thread: Removing (decorators) paint from Myford Panel |

The edge of an expired credit card, or any similar plastic item with a cut edge. The edges do degrade quickly, but the plastic is gentle on the underlying paint. Use it as a scraper. Finish off with T-cut if needed. I once had to remove hundreds of wind blown spots of paint this way that had landed on the cars in a garage forecourt.

Thread: ventilator production coronavirus |
18/03/2020 14:11:14 |
The Cabinet Office sent an 'urgent request for resources' that was presumably distributed to companies nationwide through various channels (I received it via the local 'combined authority' The request is moderately wide ranging but also quite specific - they are looking for people with experience in certain industry sectors (medical devices, pharmaceutical, suppliers and sub-contractors to the above), and also companies that already manufacture/supply 'critical components' that might go into ventilators. I suspect that things are steered to a large degree by this being a highly regulated area. They don't seem to be looking for general manufacturing capabilities. Reading between the lines - people with relevant expertise/experience may be diverted from their current jobs into the manufacturing effort. There is a parallel track sourcing manufacturing/warehousing space.

Thread: Powder coating |
03/03/2020 07:41:57 |
Powder coat finishes are almost always porous to some degree (as are paints). In industrial applications, steel items are often galvanised prior to powder coating if they will be used in an aggressive environment, precisely because the powder coat won't stop moisture reaching the substrate. |
Thread: VFD to lathe motor connector |
12/02/2020 12:24:55 |
There is a difference between what is required for connector 'within' a machine, compared to those that provide a separable connection to the external supply. The provision or otherwise of separate earth bonding may influence what is acceptable.

Thread: Noisy Lathe Gearbox |
06/02/2020 17:00:04 |
The attack of bronze typically happens when acidic combustion by-products are present alongside the EP additives. So the thing you typically should avoid is using an EP oil in an engine. In a gearbox there shouldn't be combustion by-products present, so no problem. |
Thread: mitutoyo digital calliper problem |
27/01/2020 11:47:56 |
Check around on line for the error 05 problem. Some suggest dirt on the rack/sensor may be implicated. Worth making sure the battery is good. If holding battery down works, then maybe some packing either above battery or below the lower contact might help... |

Perhaps ask Mitutoyo 'Spare & Repairs' ... They have a UK facility (details on their web site), and I presume they will also have them in other major markets. Their Japanese site claims to have parts lists available Edited By David Jupp on 27/01/2020 10:55:42 |

. The smaller the parts, the better because you can pack in a higer proportion of steel. Not quite the full picture. As long as the parts are 'small' relative to the mould, filler part size doesn't make any difference. It is actually the distribution of sizes that affects the packing density (smaller parts can fit in gaps between larger). If you don't believe this, consider using 1/4" ball bearings or cannon balls. The packing density will be the same if just one size is used (the scale changes but the proportion of empty space remains the same). If you use BOTH, then the ball bearings can fill much of the space between cannon balls. The packing density would go up again if you also used steel powder with spherical particles (would fill gaps between ball bearings). |

Fenner produce adaptors beyond the bolt on style for Taper Lock Bushes, their 'hub adaptors' may be worth a look. |
Thread: Punching holes in metals |

If the holes happen to be a standard size, hole punches used when building control panels can be surprisingly inexpensive (e.g. Q Max brand). |
Thread: Colour matching. |
02/01/2020 10:08:23 |
Be aware that the type of light source used to illuminate will affect the perceived/measured colour. Matching the colour under one light type, won't always give a match under other lights. Good luck. |

Thread: VFD Switch on Frequency |
12/12/2019 14:01:31 |
The front panel knob may be an encoder rather than a pot (to sense rotation, not absolute position). The smaller Schneider VFDs are like that for example. In that case the VFD only knows the knob has rotated 'so many clicks, plus or minus from starting point' - At power off the position will be lost unless of course there is a parameter setting that can retain the position/frequency. A 'start up frequency' may have been set. Best thing to do is check the manual carefully for the precise model, different brands/models have different capabilities. If it is a mainstream brand, try calling their technical support line or drop them an e-mail. |
Thread: Annealing Brass |
01/12/2019 08:49:43 |
It is the time at elevated temperature that does the annealing - the quench is not involved in the annealing. With Brass, it is possible to quench, because that doesn't cause a phase change - whereas with Steel, quenching can often harden the metal, by the production of martensite (so when annealing steel, slow cooling is the norm). |
