Thread: name this vice

I found one in my Dads shed when I had to clear it - didn't have the heart to get rid. Don't know where he got it from. Oddly enough, I rediscovered it last week!

Thread: hacksaw
30/09/2015 23:30:12

In my years of collecting tools I have two Eclispe hacksaws. I have a course blade in one and a fine toothed blade in the other. It just save time changing blades to suit the thickness of material I want to cut. Eclispe also make a better design of junior hacksaw as well. I do like the idea of keeping blades for ferrous and non-ferrous material.

I set my alarm so that I wouldn't miss the eclispe while staying in Somerset (down the road from Glastonbury) it was pretty clear night with little light pollution to spark of. An interesting sight to behold! I hope I'm about to see the next harvest & red moon in 2033!

P.S. Some good shots everyone...

Thread: where is geoff

Geoff.. I've had the same problem with my iPad Air. It totally clagged up - the only way I could reboot was to hold down the power down button top right and the button central bottom at the same time. It came back to life getting rid of some induced bugs that occurred after in download the update!

Thread: What did you do today (2015)

These Phoenix Phollies figurines remind me of an American artist Gill Evlgren. 😜 I better not say any more! 😳

Thank you all for your kind regards referring to my retirement. I'm looking forward to not get out at the crack sparrows in the morning to go to work! Clive regarding the price of things - thanks heavens for eBay!

25/09/2015 21:53:19

After 46 years of gainful employment, I've taken early retirement - today has been my last day. Now I can devote time to some of my projects that I've waiting to get on with. I've had a five year plan to set up a modest workshop which I've managed to do so, there's no more excuses for not doing anything! Cheers everybody! 😀

Try www.mantek.co.uk in Aldershot Hampshire. They sort my requirement out ok.

Usual disclaimer.

Thread: Probably needs new bearings but should I paint it - giggle
15/09/2015 22:11:58

I bought an old Wikes 6" bench grinder at a car boot for a silly 'take it away' price that vibrated like a good'n. After tripping over it a few times having been discarded on the workshop floor, it was either down to the tip or do something with it. In my book it's got to be seriously unrepairable before anything gets thrown out so I set about investigating the problem. The runout on both wheels were excessive to say the least! I made up some new Delrin centres which improved the runout but still not enough for my liking. The next attempt was to fill the centres up with epoxy resin and once set I bored out the hole to size to a snug fit on the shaft. After redressing the wheels it now runs with little vibration. I did skim the pressed steel flanges to ensure they were flat on the wheel clamping sides and the locking nut seating. It's a handy size but I still prefer the floor standing 8" grinder for most of my lathe tool sharpening.

Thread: Safety glasses for spectacle wearers.
14/06/2015 13:54:45

I'm in a fortunate situation were my employer pays for my eye tests and safety glasses. I have Varifocals for general walk about and work with single prescription for computer and close work. I've been wearing Varifocals for many years now and have learnt it not worth scrimping on. I had my own business prior to working were I am now - even then I had propper PPE for self preservation! The tax man subsidised the cost then.

Now all I have to do is to plan my next visit to Vission express (usual disclaimers) before I take early retirement!

Neil....

"The problem with paralleling transformers is that, unless they are near identical they may have very different output voltages depending on the load they see.

Lots of info HERE."

Arr... Reminders me of my college days! Almost a distance memory!

Thread: Bridgeport twin speed motor phase converter or vfd?
27/05/2015 21:25:22

Chris... I've got a spare genuine Bridgeport motor but you'll have to wait until my Daughter inherent's my goods and chattels. The Bridgeport can go with it!

I use an inverter VFD with it and the power feed on the table is run from 110v AC (but not centre tapped to earth).

P.S. Why do I keep getting †every time I hit the return key on my iPad?

Hi... Can't you borrow a small clock or watch makers lathe? That's the only way I would consider making that many. Or.... What about finding someone with a Boxford TCL CNC joby... That would certainly do the trick without losing your sanity!

Thread: Sparkies advice please
24/05/2015 16:27:01

I seem to have forgot to put a smiley face at the end of my first sentence just to de-fuse any problem that may arise. 😳.  That is if you'll excuse the pun! 😉

24/05/2015 12:58:33

Ed...

On the contrary Re. "I seem to be making certain assertions about all Electricians..." I totally agree that there are Electrians that should be more than capable of designing safe electrical installations and I am not slagging off my profession. As an practicing electronics and electrical engingineer and being affiliated with the IEE now the IET, I feel adequately qualified to pass comment as opposed to some people with ideas of what is safe and exceptable. Since the introduction of Part P, which I may say I was was opposed to on the grounds the someone was making money enforcing these regulations. (But that another discussion in itself and has been raised on numerous times) there has been a reduction of dodgy installations installed by people with little experience or knowledge regarding what's acceptable.

So I'm sorry if I hit a nerve with my reply to a previous posting. I've come from hands on from the tools as it were. So I've been there, seen it, designed it or repaired it!
