Hi Brian,

I'm just about to start the S50 as my second engine. I chose it because like Joel above I like mill engines. It's slightly larger than the 10H. There are a series of articles somewhere on the net detailing Tubal Cain's approach to building it. I can't remember where I found them but if you search he called it "Sally".

Thanks Jim, I thought about the Paddleduck engine because it is more like an engineering course with all John's extra tips, rather than just a set of plans but in the end plumped for the S50. I might try it in the future.

David, I don't often find threads having this problem but this one does. What makes it more infuriating is that there is no way of viewing the hidden text. Zooming text size just zooms adverts as well.

Might be something to do with the pics in Graham's post.

Thanks Bob. Next is a Stuart S50 bought at the Midlands exhibition. Feels like I'm following a well trodden path here. I need to have a practice milling on the lathe first so I don't make a mess of the castings.

I hope no-one minds yet another oscillating engine but here are some pics of my first project which I completed last week.

Took me about six months (a few hours a week - not retired yet ). Very steep learning curve (more reading than doing) but it did work first time.

Hi Chris,

I went on Friday and stayed all day. Really enjoyed it but as I have only attended Manchester and Harrogate once each I don't have much to compare it with. Think I heard one of the main machine suppliers saying they weren't going to Sandown this year.

One thing that did surprise me was how muddy the field, sorry car park, was. I managed to get my car stuck for the first time in thirty-five years driving and would like to say a very big thank you to the three gents who helped push me out (Black VW Golf) if they read this forum. Hope they didn't get too muddy.

I'll be going next year as the wife loved Leamington Spa.

I've looked at your site before for the info on tapping drill sizes but I'll have another look at the suggested pages.

Thanks Joe, the end mill holder you linked to was the one I had in mind but I'll probably go with the ER25 collet chuck that Terry and David suggested as it seems much more versatile.

David, I realised it would need a drawbar for the morse taper collet but hadn't thought through the fact that the bore would be blocked therefore the backplate fitting one you linked to is a more sensible choice when holding stock.

Terry, would the chuck that attaches to the backplate be the better choice or does it make no difference? Prices seem similar.

Andy, I've read that suggestion about the gear somewhere else in the last few days. A handwheel on the leadscrew is looking useful and I'd read about the modification on other sites but it was a bit too much work at the time. I might try the gear idea.

Thanks for highlighting this Ady. It'll be a great shame if it stops flying. I'm sure it inspires lots of youngsters to want to work in engineering. Planes are like steam engines they come alive when they are running especially to children. It's interesting to note that the cost of the wing repairs are one week's salary for Cristiano Ronaldo or Lewis Hamilton. Strange priorities in where we spend our money.
