Good start, very laudable to make the tooling first, most of us dive in and then realise we don’t have the tooling needed.

Very nice and runs well. What have you used for the ignition? I am building a Farmboy and am starting to think about making sparks.

Thread: How to get that high end paint finish
13/04/2019 15:08:40

This is a subject dear to my heart, in fact I have just posted a video on You Tube in which I bang on about paint finishes and how it is not hard to get a decent one.

Over the years I heave done a fair bit of of painting and the contributors are correct when they say it is a skill that needs practice , that said it also needs an understanding of the process and the right kit.

What really taught me about painting was owning and maintaining a narrow boat, which over a few years I have repainted in sections. Exactly the same techniques can be used painting models machine tools etc.

I will dig out some photos and post them here, if there any interest then I can perhaps write a short guide to the process.

Just a couple of points in the meantime: Synthetic enamels generally should not be thinned for brush painting, if you do under no circumstances use white spirit, it will cause the paint to loose shine. The other golden rule is use good quality brushes. For large projects I use Purdy Monarch Elite and small stuff British made Sable brushes. Both expensive but will last for years if treated well.

It was taken after it was finished, it is now a bit less shiny, not sure if is appropriate to polish a hack saw.

Just fell across this. I built one of these last year it was an interesting project. It marked my return to model engineering after a nearly 20 year gap. Not sure if you have done it yet but the fit between the saw casting bearing surfaces and the arm that it runs on needs to be on the tight side. Mine makes a bit of a clunk when cutting as it changes direction. On reflection I would machine it within a few thou and then hand fit until it just slide on the bar. It was surprising how it loosened up jouring the running in process.

I’m very please overall, it cuts very well and is still on the original blade after 6 months.

Thread: Warco VM-16 dead
28/01/2018 13:58:24

Brilliant, that was the problem. The switch was not quite closed, gave it a nudge and all fine.

Thanks, you have saved a lot of head scratching and possible bad language.

I have a Warco VM-16 which is a year old. The other day I tried to switch it on and nothing happened.

Checked the obvious, plug fuses- all fine. Delved a little deeper and had a look inside the control box. Once I got over the initial shock (no pun intended) of just how much wiring there is, I was able to determine that there was power to the front panel as far as the push to start button, the relay which I would normally here latch is silent. The circuit diagram is not much help and to be honest although I can work out simple circuits the wiring and control systems on the Warco are beyond my understanding.

I have tried and failed to make contact with Warren Machine tools by various means without success, this is disappointing as I believe when the fault occurred when the machine was still under warranty.

Has anybody had a similar experience or can any of the more electronic savvy enlighten me as to what the problem may be?

Thread: 1950s Myford grey paint assistance please

Craft master paints can probably help. They seem to have a match for most things.
