Thread: "TINKER" tool & cutter grinder |

The same person sold a Stent a few weeks ago. Some things like this with decent owners could go on for a hundred years passing from one model engineer to another. If it was his relative I hope he keeps one of the models in the family. When you think about the design it is like a very (yes very very) stripped down Quorn so you might be able to extend and adapt it from looking at one of those. I saw a book on the Quorn, I may have to get that to see if it inspries me to greatness, some chance. Anyway thanks for the idea. Chris |

Kind of off topic; Had one made by then-club member Frank McLean ("Live Steam" readers know who he is). In the "share and share alike" mode, I lent it to a second club member who then inconveniently passed away. His "stuff" purchased by a third, who is not parting with "his" Tinker grinder! This is a few years ago; I'm not going to touch one of those again, bad luck for me! I now have a Worden, and have learnt my lesson...

I realise that this is an old thread but it's the only one that comes up when you use the search function.
Anyway I have managed to pick one of these gadgets up and will undoubtedly have questions when it arrives. Jim, do you have any pictures of your set-up? In fact does anyone have any pictures? |

That looks great. Can I ask where the design came from, I might like a go myself. |

Chris J, Ah you have a means of collecting the swarf from the drip tray, everyone else is talking about protecting the shears from falling swarf Yes I'm always out of step !! |

Chris J, please explain what you mean by a cut out "to go round the lathe mount" under the chuck? The Hemmingway item will pass under a 4" (100mm) chuck as intended. Excuse the mess but I'm in the middle of something. I have pulled the try out a bit (to the right) to make it clearer. Hope this ok, I'm having trouble uploading to my album.

Can't give you a proper answer I'm afraid I think a tray might serve very well if you cut a section out to allow it to go round the lathe mount under the chuck. |

Thyanks Peter, that's exactly what I was looking for, although Chris's comment has got me looking at Dikinson toolposts tyope designs that pull instead of push. But that design wopuldn't let me use my dovetail cutter ! Neil
So, you buy a new cutter and then dovetail everything in sight
It's a sickness you know |

I imagine it has the best repeatability and it locks block and holder solid, whilst being quick. I don't like the approach where one dovetail has to be screwed up (how can a moving dovetail be more accurate?) But if you know better ways I'm eager to hear any suggestions. Neil
No not at all, it was a genuine question.
Check my post count, I'm new |

Neil Why the piston style may I ask ? Do you think it is the best type ? Chris |

I used to keep Marine Fish in a previous life and there are a variety of submersable pumps and something called RO tubing. My guess is that suds can't be as toxic as salted water. Here is a link you can use larger fittings if you want. There are many small submersible pumps and switches in the aquarium section of ebay. |

Hi Chris, Sorry my error it should have been screwcutting simplified -- look at this link Your gearbox is the standard Myford Quick Change box or a Norton box in engineering parley Regards John Brilliant thanks.
I'm in Great Yarmouth by the way. |

I couldn't find the "screw cutting made easy" sadly, brain issue probably. I'm slowly coming around to the idea that I should leave the lathe alone and work around it. I do fancy putting some magnetic DRO's on the top slides. Thanks for the advice guys, it's slow to go in but I'm getting there. |

Here is a picture of my gearbox, not sure what type it is. |
