Thread: Welding hose opinions sought
06/02/2014 03:55:37

Fuel gasses have L/H threads but LPG appears to be parallel and Acetylene appears to be tapered .

They will start into each other but not far enough to seat the rubber seal.

The outlet is different as LPG uses R/H for this but Acetylene is still L/H.

I Remember a few years back I bought an LPG torch at the local cheapo tool store but it ended up having a weird thread on the inlet , I ended up having to go to a gas specialist store to get a hose made and then found out it needed an adjustable regulator as the generic BBQ unit I was hoping to use had too much juice .

By the end of that saga it ended up costing more than a name brand unit that came with a hose and regulator crying

They say you live and learn !
I did a lot of living that day !

Hi Geoff,

Type in www. welding design .com into your search engine and then do a site search for " a heads up on hose and regulator safety .
Then run down the page to "selecting the correct hose"

Make sure you don't ever use an lpg reg for acetylene or you will blow yourself up !
Acetylene regulators are marked not to exceed 15psi for a good reason and lpg regs can go way over that pressure .

To tell you the truth I would buy a new set of hoses for oxy/acetylene as a set just to be safe that way you can leave the acetylene hose connected to the acetylene regulator/bottle and likewise for the lpg hose /regulator set and you only have to change the oxy bottle over to change fuel gasses .

Thread: Diamond toolholder
03/02/2014 02:41:42

Hi Chris,

That is something I will try out as I have some old carbide tips floating around the workshop so I may as well braze them onto a square shank for my tangential tool and see how they go.

Hi all,

Disclaimer - I don't know anyone , receive gratuities or anything else from eccentric engineering and I don't recommend anything I haven't tried myself .

Yes they work well and for turning most materials they make life easy .

I own a couple of tool holders from Eccentric Engineering and have found them to be of a good quality and excellent to deal with .

You can make your own if you are able and an internet search should provide some ideas .

The only down side is that you may become lazy and not learn to grind your own tools because once you use one of these it will be the tool you reach for most often but hey you have the rest of your life to learn how to grind tool bits !

I haven't heard of anyone brazing a carbide tip to some square steel to make a tangential carbide tipped tool for cast iron and other materials that can have hard spots or a tough skin that will destroy tool steel so maybe something to try .

Come to think of it I wonder if carbide comes in square ?

Richard ,

You did not mention what lathe you are intending on using the tangential tool in as there are different sizes available but the smallest size does not come in both left and right handed types unfortunately as it is just right for the C2 SEIG lathe and maybe the next size up.

Hi There

I am not bothered about the energy consumption of a poper light bulb.

What I do care about is not being able to read by the light given off by the stupid things now available.

I would like to read at night but can't see to do so.

regards David

David might I suggest you try one of the new generation of Led Light globes as I found the pure white light they emit fantastic for reading ,although they are expensive once I fitted it and turned it on I felt the cost was justufied .

PS. Ian, there is more than one person doing this

Edited By Robbo on 18/01/2014 17:32:55

Yes I know but if they are stupid enough to sell them on EBAY then they deserve to get caught and punished .

I have a few CDs of magazines (not pirated but purchased from the copyright owner) that went out of publication many years ago and I would much prefer the hardcopy as I need a PC to read the CD but a book I have all the equipment already installed in my noggin so I can read it anywhere anytime.

I wonder how the publishers of MEW & ME would feel if some one copied the digital archives to CD and started selling it on EBAY ?
They probably are already but I haven't looked for it and have no intention of doing so.

Ian

The publishers are looking into this and hopefully will take legal action against this person .

I wonder if the sales of these books pays royalties to the author per book sold ?
If it does buying that CD is robbing them of their income .

Also reported from this end of the planet .

Unfortunately this is all too common and the main reason that Lex from Swarfrat enterprises has stopped making DVDs .

I'm going to try and contact the publisher to let them know also .

Thread: plans for oil gun/can??
17/01/2014 00:23:28

Got those plans today in his article " A brief treatise on oiling machine tools" .
Simpler than I thought and guess what I'm making this weekend !

The one shown in the video was a commercially available unit, they mentioned the name and I looked it up on the web - $250 US A UNIT !
The one thing I liked about it was the pressure gauge that showed that you were pumping oil in and not air- just pump until it shows pressure and give it one more for luck .

I'm thinking of trying some of that LUCAS oil treatment as slide way lube, it seems tacky enough , is EP rated and doesn't stink although it is more expensive than regular slide way oil .

My unit has a motor that also runs hot but I had a look at the specification plate on the motor. And it said Temp = 60 deg centigrade which is approx what it runs at ,I have had it for over 10 yrs and it is still going even after the abuse I have lavished upon it !

I run mine up on the highest speed (via pulleys) so maybe disconnect your drive belt and let the motor run with no load and see if there is any temperature difference ?

Hi Jim,

Guy Lautard has plans for an oil gun I have not yet had a look at them but you can buy from him or try Amazon , Google his name and you will find what you want .

I'm thinking of making an new pump unit to fit the cheap oil cans that I seem to have a lot of laying around .

You can buy quality oil cans but they are not cheap and there are a few threads on this site that discuss them .

I was watching one of Guys DVDs. And they had an oil gun that looked more like a grease gun that they used to lubricate a Bridgeport Mill and you can also buy these but $$$$$$ .

SLOTDRILLER:

Thanks for your advice. Is the UV exposure something to do with etching the PCB?

On a different point, it did occur to me that the built-in turntable and fan might be useful for small-scale spray painting.

Yes the casing is stripped out and a set UV lights are mounted in the top of the cooking compartment and a tray is set up under this to expose the PCB .
You can add a timer to the casing to control exposure time then the PCB is etched as normal .
These days you can get a set of resist sheets that you print the PCB track layout onto with a laser printer and iron it onto a piece of blank circuit board then peel it off and etch .

I have also seen an old printer / scanner housing use in this way as well.

10/01/2014 01:36:31

The microwave oven casing also makes a good UV exposure box for making custom circuit boards also but please be very careful with the capacitor and transformer inside as they can be lethal .
When I come across a capacitor with a working voltage of more than 36 volts I will short the leads out just to be sure it has no residual charge - dying is no fun !

Hi all,

PC power supplies yield some usefull medium duty hook up wire which I find usefull for wiring up small motors and switches - or if the power supply is still working they can be used to power things .

The scrap bin at work gets inspected daily and I recently scored some100x25 mm flat bar that came off a Garbage truck , it's not the best to machine but when it is free I don't care !

I'm still chewing through some 40mm round bar that came off a piece of equipement at our treatment plant , it was the drive axles on a set of chain driven scrapers that were refurbished .

I even stoop low enough to keep the stainless cap screws that I remove from wast pit lids usually 8 or 10 mm @ 50 mm long .

Thread: Workshop Break in

I can sympathise with your loss as I had the same sort of equipment flogged a few years back.

They cut through the hasp with a set of bolt cutters and bent it to release the lock , unplugged my air compressor hose from the impact gun and rolled up the hose and wheeled it out leaving the impact gun on a stool !
Then locked the shed up again by bending the hasp back and setting the lock up so it covered the cut .

Must have planned to come back but after I discovered the theft I made a heavy hasp and staple unit from 3/8 inch stainless and made it so it covered the whole lock with a housing so they can't cut the lock.
Everything with wheels was chained to something heavy or to a lug dynabolted to the ground and anything that could cut the chain was locked in a heavy tool box .
A cheap alarm was fitted also.

I would suspect that my compressor was converted into drugs and all I could hope for was for the mongrel to overdose and croak .

One other thing that a friend of mine is always on about and that is Don't advertise !
If you go inside for lunch etc close the door so no one can see inside and this is especially true if you can see into the workshop from the street or a lane .

Thread: Sensor for toy
03/12/2013 17:26:37

Hi Geoff,

Isit possible that there could be an IR LED in parallel to the photo diode ?

I was thinking that it could just be a simple comparator circuit that senses the voltage of the negative side wire and that negative side wire could have a small resistor in series that along with the current limiting resistor for theIR LED would create a voltage divider and you also get a voltage drop across the LED.

So by placing the Photo diode in parallel with the IR LED and it's current limiting resistor you have a light activated bypass switch as it creates a short across the led / resistor and this would create a very short voltage spike that a comparator could sense .

the other resistor would be internal to the sensor circuit in the doll , maybe if you can measure the voltage on the leads and then measure the resistance of the low side ( negative ) lead to the battery negative ?

I was playing around with a laser training tool that I made a couple of years ago for pistol shooting , it uses a sound activated laser mounted to the gun that activates a Photo transistor in a receiver on the other side of the room .

I dug the receiver out and set it up and sat my tv remote on top , then pressed a button and if I waved my hand past at about 2 ft away there reflected IR beam off my hand activated the receiver .

Just a thought.

Hi Geoff,

Just out of curiosity if you hook up the IR filtered PhotoDiode can you get the unit to activate by pointing a TV remote at it and pressing one of the buttons ?
