I haven’t read any books on fusion probably because the manual for turbo cad 17 was 3 inches thick so it sort of put me off books on cad .

The other problem with books especially ones for fusion is that the programme is constantly being tweaked so a book written 2 years ago won’t give you any info about the changes made after it was written .

I started off watching Lars Christensen on Youtube then discovered another guy called Brad Tallis and between the two of those channels i have learned enough to get me where i want to go , the beauty of video is you can set up a phone , ipad or another computer to watch the person on YouTube as you follow along in fusion at the same time - if you miss something or don’t understand something you simply rewind the video a little and try again.

For those who have never used a CAD programme of any kind before the beginners tutorial by Paul mcworter is a good intro to fusion 360 and his Arduino tutorials are second to none imho.

I have a set of pretty little colour coded ones i bought for my taig lathe and once you strip the paint off and sharpen them they work ok , I don’t use any special wheel for carbide just the standard aluminium oxide wheel that came with my bench grinder. I chucked them in some acetone to strip the paint off the shank as it saved making a mess with the wire wheel on my grinder .

Bunnings sell a carbide tipped drill set that will drill metal ,i bought a set out of curiosity and they were not expensive .

if you want to try again with a HSS drill slow speed , cutting fluid and lean on the drill a little so it doesn’t rub .

Chain bar oil on everything except the gearbox .

Moist air (high humidity),high dew point temp , cold air temperatures followed by a rise in temperature which means the machine can’t warm up as fast as the air around it .

to stop it you either lower the humidity or keep the machine warm .

I have been playing with digital humidity and temperature sensors and purchased some SHT10 Units off ebay, had a terrible time getting them to work so looked up the spec sheet and found the 10k resistor was missing off the board . I don’t know if this was a fault or designed that way but it sure would have saved me some hair pulling if the seller had have let me know. Ebay need to seriously clean up their act and sort out the sellers that say they are in your country but are really in China .

The cross slide and its mounting system are fairly flimsy and flex a lot under heavy load so if something is going to break i would rather it to be the toolpost or holder . There is an old saying here in Australia - there is no use building a brick sh*thouse on a bark canoe !

You can also use a boring head mounted in the toolpost to make a radius tool , the fine adjustment makes setting up a bit easier .

The motor would have been feeling the punishment that day !

Who said little lathes cant turn big things!

I have a slightly different regime as i tend to use my machines on weekends mostly so i usually do a clean up on Sunday or Monday then wipe the shiny bits down with lanotec to stop any rusting and this means i have to clean that off before i use the machine - i use cheap spray degreaser ( repco or supacheap etc) and this means i have to oil the bed before use . You can never apply to much oil to a machine and i use chain bar oil, its cheap , it works , it sticks in there and it don’t stink . If I’m machining cast iron i wipe the machine down so the only oil is between the carriage and bed - cast iron dust and oil = grinding paste !

I’m currently working on a mini dehumidifier for one of my lathes using a peltier module and the arduino code that was described by Silly old duffer in a past issue of MEW, so far results look promising but testing has been hindered by dry - low humidity weather . If it works it will hopefully put an end to the painting on of a thick coat of lanotec to stop rusting in winter as the condensation can be horrific in winter here in western Sydney.

The A2Z is all alloy and i have had no probs

Just got to remember to use hers & not yours 😁.

I use either chain lube for motor bikes or tac2 spray to lube my chucks and back gears of my lathe because it is designed to not fling off . - i used to use a 3 jaw mostly but mostly use four jaw now except for machining hex stock which is fairly rarely .

I use one of these and the Chinese knock off is available just about everywhere .

You’re not getting anywhere near this lathe until you take me for a walk !

I have no personal links to any of these apps i started using them when my shop calc calculator died and i didnt want to fork out $100au + for a new one especially when i had an old ipad that still work fine and i can choose what apps i put on it . Some of these apps have a pro version where you pay a small one off fee to purchase it , they sometimes unlock a few more features and get rid of the ads.

Just for those who are interested i found the hague thread calculator app for ipad/phone has a listing for this thread , it also does many other odd threads like UNEF , UNS etc and it is free .these days i use my old ipad exclusively for these apps as it saves a lot of time that would be wasted rummaging around looking through books . Unfortunately it doesn’t seem to be available for android phones .
