Thread: How heavy ?
18/01/2023 10:53:12

Fred Dibnah deduced that dragging was used to build a lot of our big castles and cathedrals (walls etc) because it was so much easier and faster than a medieval crane

So most of those big stone lumps were dragged up slopes made of dodgy wooden scaffolding

Thread: Boxford 8"shaper

The forward power cutting stroke is when the drive pin is at the top of the circle because you get more torque when the pin is further away from the anchor/hinge point of the pendulum

It's like opening a door, the further from the hinge you go, the easier it is to move the door

Mr whitworth was a very smart cookie

Yet another subtle geometric titbit is in that animation

The fixed link from the top of the powered pendulum means you can use a hole and pin in the ram

If the pendulum attaches directly to the ram, like in most compact shapers, you need a vertical slot instead of a hole because it describes a tiny arc at the tip (So the pin goes up and down)

Here's a good example of a shaper working backwards

none of them even noticed either

If it's not tied down then make sure it's on the slowest speed when you start it up or it could quite literally go for a walk

And check it's wired the right way round, the ram moves slow for the cut, fast for the return because of the geometrics

Thread: I thought winter was over.
17/01/2023 14:23:59

There's been a 6 inch disc of ice hanging from the bird feeder bush since yesterday am when I took it out of their water

It's pretty crispy just now, hopefully warms up by saturday

I used to do that with all my smokes and whisky

nice work

Thread: Removing a stuck chuck.
15/01/2023 11:12:52

A block of wood on the lathe bed will hold the chuck

Then apply steady pressure via the spindle or backgear

Do not whack anything, that's why things break

If you find a non damaged part of the backgear, rig up something to keep a decent steady pressure on the spindle nose unscrewing, and go for a cup of tea

(A bit like with releasing a car balljoint, put it under pressure and let nature take its course)

Thread: MIG welder
14/01/2023 13:49:24

If you get serious about sheet then a unit that goes down to 30-35A and 17 volts makes life a lot easier

Decent tack welds that melt right through are possible

edit

I've never seen gasless alu wire so far, only the solid stuff that needs a bottle

edit2

and watch with galvanised, the zinc becomes a poisonous gas(you probbly know that)

I'm not a pro, more an enthusiastic amateur

Gasless mig is fine for thinner work up to 140A 8mm

Over 140A - 10mm plus I use arc/MMA because stick penetrates solid steel far better

It's very good for sheet work, get a more expensive unit if you're doing quite a lot of work, £200+ a pop units have a far better more stable arc for tack welding thin work

If you find yourself doing a lot of work and enjoying it you will quickly move up from a base unit to a better mid range intermediate unit

Get a decent mask like a parweld trucolour

Gasless mig produces a harder more brittle weld which is harder to machine than softer MMA welds but it grinds down fine

Thread: Anyone got a Rhubarb clump still going?
13/01/2023 23:28:05

We were just talking about it today

when we were young a huge number of gardens still had it from the war, a dirty clump usually in an unloved corner of a garden which produced rhubarb most years, I recall it up to the 1980s and then it kind of disappeared as fashions changed

Anyone in here still got a clump on the go in their garden?

Thread: Battery Technology
13/01/2023 15:24:50

A certain Elon Musk came along and bought the technology and the rest as they is history.

Sounds like Mushet

He made the first decent steel railway rails

Everyone has heard of Bessemer, Carnegie etc, but not Mushet

Maybe one day we'll be able to launch all our really toxic stuff into space and nudge it towards the sun

13/01/2023 13:46:03

The big problem is the mining and toxic pollution problems from new tech stuff

China produces 95% of those rare earth products because no-one else wants the incredible toxic mess it generates to create a final useable product

So when the entire world goes battery mad, just like when the entire world went fossil fuel mad....

we're going to create ANOTHER huge global mess.... just like we did the last time
