Thread: looking for new 3d cad |
21/03/2023 15:04:14 |
The biggie for me now I have a CAD which works for me is the work storage If you really like it - and you suddenly use it a lot - then you will start to amass a huge amount of work and effort in a relatively short period of time, so the ability to keep it backed up safe and snug tucked up under your bed suddenly becomes a really big deal It doesn't take long to accumulate either, pulling in previously made drawings for bits and pieces drawn a month ago saves a lot of repetition time, even if they need resizing |

What our forefathers could have done with this CAD thing in the 1940s 50s and 60s kinda makes me sad that they missed out, it just makes it so easy |

A decent CAD will never be free although you may get a free trial period Got Alibre Atom a couple of months ago for 250 and it's been a gamechanger, plus everything is on your computer and can be backed up, essential once you start getting hundreds of widgets I took the free route for quite a few years but if you want to get serious then you've got to get serious, not play at it With a trial period you can see if you get on with it This is me within 8 weeks of starting from almost nowhere and I've got a bucketload of stuff on my computer now, I will never be bored ever again Your licence only needs to be verified once on the net then as long as you don't do something like a system restore it will be fine. If you are going to mess about with your computer then you release your licence back to the Alibre server, sort out your computer, then get it put back afterwards It's so simple its ridiculous Edited By Ady1 on 21/03/2023 11:46:25 |

Thread: Myford type M half nut |
16/03/2023 23:35:27 |
PB may be too hard I burned through 2 original leadscrew halfnuts in 12 months early in my ownership, it was a really soft type of bronze to save on leadscrew wear and maximise half nut wear A small sample piece from your own one might be testable by someone who is familiar with these things Edited By Ady1 on 16/03/2023 23:38:44 |

If you use your pal a lot you will burn through halfnuts, the bronze is very soft |
Thread: Reverse Engineering [using FreeCAD] |
15/03/2023 14:33:41 |
I've had occasional issues with mirroring because everything has to be exactly right and I spotted small issues later on which may have been me or the software So I prefer to be in control via sketches If mirroring isn't a problem you can just put in a manual plane/axis |

Most of the time if you're going to do something a bit goofy that isn't regular I've found a block much easier A "bounding box" in post 2 Then carve out the bits you need |
Thread: Resin Printers - Review in hand |
14/03/2023 11:06:46 |
I'm not printing yet but I'm doing plenty of design stuff atm. Very manual, with consequent slowness If anyone has personal knowledge of a cheap decent handheld 3D scanner on the market this would massively speed up maker efficiency for 3D printer users |
Thread: AVM MAS 140 lathe |
12/03/2023 18:09:53 |
As a simple example the smaller Pultra 1590 lathe uses its base for leveling purposes and to resist bed twist under load The lower base section is actually essential for completing this small lathe setup, it creates a steel box when it is bolted to the lathe, together the base + the lathe are much stronger Bigger stronger machines like yours need to be straightened up manually by the user

12/03/2023 17:43:22 |
That's a good question for a lathe needing adjustment The loading still needs to be equally distributed, any bed twist must be eliminated More experienced folk than me will know the details concerning a bigger machine like yours some searches to help you on your way Edited By Ady1 on 12/03/2023 17:50:46 |

Well done you. Always feels good to accomplish those major one-off tasks successfully. And all you needed was a jack Welcome to the brotherhood Edited By Ady1 on 12/03/2023 16:56:54 |
Thread: Solid edge community edition download problems |
12/03/2023 14:48:35 |
Is it possible to format your D: drive? I always go NTFS Video stuff can be a pain I have been getting crashes in "my" tanks videogame recently and the only change was a small upgrade with my firefox browser to get into the UK Alibre site However, if I minimise one window when I use the other window I get no more crashes, so at least one window must always be minimised If both windows are up I get a crash in 5 - 10 minutes Edited By Ady1 on 12/03/2023 14:52:49 |
Thread: Is there any literature on developing plans for a model from scratch? |
12/03/2023 13:58:52 |
Recall a merchant navy engineer who had visited a Royal Navy ship and said how much easier and faster maintenance was because they had built that into the engine room design Merchant ships were built for the lowest dollar possible and to maximise cargo space The other problem is the users are rarely the designers, there needs to be communication A submarine chap who got onto a U-boat after WW2 wrote that the German boats were far better designed than the british subs as far as crew convenience was concerned That would make German crews far better at their job for far longer, particularly since fatigue is a big factor when you are stuck in a smelly tin box for 2 or 3 months Edited By Ady1 on 12/03/2023 14:07:00 |

The standard of work would get a mention in the ME if it was one of the usual suspects who made it |
