Thread: Flash Steam
04/06/2018 08:44:47

Section 2.5 book 2 of the new UK code (under 3 bar litres) states that flash steam boilers may not be tested under this code.

03/06/2018 20:28:46

Hi Jon

Your local club inspecter will not certify flash steam boilers so you would need to have it tested and insured via a specialist company.

Thread: Filling traction engine boiler
27/05/2018 12:58:45

Thanks - definately intended to add water - decided not to install.

26/05/2018 19:57:25

I am in the midst of designing a 2" scale boiler for a customer who wants to build a traction engine (his own design). The drawings I have on file typically show a plug in the (smokebox) boiler end plate, but to this day ive never seen anyone fill their boiler this way. Is this now a redundant item?

Still looking to get my dead Proxxon angle grinder looked at - any ideas - not sending it back to Germany.

Thread: Dead Proxxon - can anyone fix it?
10/05/2018 20:46:25

My beloved Proxxon long neck angle grinder grumbled when I turned it on - turned straight off, tried it again and nothing, no noise, no smell, nothing. Short of sending it back to Germany can anyone fix it? Its not a complicated thing, either ic blown or motor goosed but electronics aint my bag. Fingers crossed, Nigel.

Stuff model engineering I'm taking up dressmaking - at £100,000 a shot beats bashing steel for brass.

(in the news: royal wedding dress to cost more than a new Myford.)

and it will still be on display somewhere long after the Myford has been melted down....probably

And I quote " £254 million to India for 2019, their latest rocket cost £250 million"...that would pay for a few patched up roads!

Thread: Anyone been involved in a car crash recently
02/05/2018 20:18:37

house insurance claim was brilliant, same as claiming off your own car insurance but when theres a risk they may not be able to recover their costs from the third party the risk is now yours - progress!

01/05/2018 13:52:15

if they sub it out then we will only buy on price as reputation is now worthless

01/05/2018 11:35:53

It used to be the case that if someone ran into you the insurance company dealt with things and you got a repaired car. Not now, not with Hastings at least. Person runs straight into my stationary car, definately not my fault. I ring insurance company, they dont deal with claims anymore and pass me to a third party company. In order to progress claim I have to wade through dozens of electronic documents, definitions and clauses and at the end have to sign a credit agreement before the claim can be processed. How on earth anyone not ps savy would get through it god only knows. The upsum is that the insurance company have absolved themselves of any interaction with the customer and if the third party make a hash of reclaiming the money yours truely has to foot the bill under the terms of the credit agreement. When I renew next year I will make a point of using an insurer who doesnt sub out its responsabilities, if any still exist.

Thread: Converting single acting to double acting
01/05/2018 10:48:05

Thanks JB - good news indeed. Its a bit rough so I will strip and machine if needed. Any idea where I can get a drawing of the reversing block?

30/04/2018 20:02:58

Thanks Jason - ive not tried running it yet but it struck me that it had been designed to run double acting but then had been plumbed in wrong - please take a look at the photo and you will see what I mean?tff.jpg

I have a Vee twin single acting oscillating steam engine which I would like to make double acting. The cylinder pivots on its mid point. Is it as simple as duplicating the existing inlet/outlet holes as a mirror image or is there more to it (I will ensure the con rod end is steam tight). Thanks.

I wish I could get my boilers to look that good teeth 2 - excellent work and fascinating progress Dean.

Thread: Boiler, build or buy.
29/04/2018 09:49:55

Hi

The complexity of boiler and thus ease with which it is made varies greatly upon the application of the steam engine being used. If you want your 1" x 2" engine to simply tick over slowly on the bench for a few minutes then a basic pot boiler will work - easy to make yourself and low pressure. If on the other hand you want it to run for twenty minutes whilst powering a boat/dynamo then things become a lot more difficult. Will it stand up to a pressure test of 120 ish psi, is it coal, meths, gas heated, do you need feed water heating, super heating and so on. If it is for your personal use then no official testing is required by law but if you intend to use it in a public place testing and verification will be required. The materials are quite expensive and the fittings even more so. You can buy our boilers with or without fittings and I am always happy to offer advice for free on your boiler build. The hydraulic test is just that (as opposed to a pnuematic test) and this should be used. All commercially built boilers should come with a test certificate stating that the boiler has been tested to 2 x maximum working pressure. Hope this helps.

If that were the case then great, I hadnt realised they were built that way. Looks terrible all the same.

Just seen this ont bay - described as "a beautifully built 1 1/2 scale allchin traction engine".....with a now totally destroyed boiler!

Its a Seuart Turner Sun Engine (castings), bit of a find as they no longer sell this line.
