Thread: Non arrival of issue 308 |
04/10/2021 10:33:07 |
I know that Mytimemedia is said to be a small outfit with limited resources but sometimes they give the impression that they've all died in the pandemic. I've emailed them several times about the non arrival of MEW issue 308 but so far have not received any sort of response. Today again the post arrived with the heavy thud of a magazine on the hall floor but alas not MEW 308. Why can't they at least do me the courtesy of an email acknowledgement. I suppose I'll have to try a phone call (or perhaps hold a seance) to see if I can raise the dead. It shouldn't be like this. Really, really fed up, Chris. |
Thread: Cannot log in! |
02/09/2021 09:27:10 |
Oh this gets better. Thanks for the reply Jason. I've just logged in and changed the password as you suggested (that's ok) but I've tried unsuccessfully to change my address but it keeps coming back with the address unchanged. Our address is a bit strange because the lane the house is on has no name, so the address is a house number and the village name so to try to identify the house better we have given the house a name. I appears the updater will only accept an address it finds in its UK lookup table so we are stuck with the old address which because of an historical typo is different to the address on the house deeds. At least our local postman (sorry person) knows us by name now and is very reliable. I am still bemused by the fact that I can set up a subscription without having a valid Mytimemedia account. Regards - Chris. |

I am trying to log into my account at Mytimemedia to check they have my new address but they don't recognise my email address when I try to reset my password. My Model Engineers Workshop magazine is still being addressed to my old residence despite changing my details in my account on the forum over 6 months ago. Do they read the forum account details? I can't understand why they don't have my email address. Don't ask if I can remember when I last logged into my Mytimemedia account because I can't. My Post Office redirection will expire in a couple of months and I don't want to pay another 60 odd quid to renew it. Thanks - Chris.

This is slightly off topic, does anyone have experience of PVT (combined photovoltaic solar thermal) systems? |
Thread: Lathe annoying 50Hz hum |
02/12/2019 03:52:53 |
Hi William, Can I suggest that the hum is 100Hz from the rectified AC used in the typical motor speed control boards that were very commonly employed before the VFD inverter systems started to take over. Chester and Warco have supplied this type of system for years. The 100Hz hum on my WM250 is very annoying. I would like to convert it to a VFD but don't think I can fit the motor in the space occupied by the original DC motor. I hope this helps, Chris.

Thread: Non arrival of MEW 272 |
19/09/2018 11:26:09 |
Hi all, Has anyone else not received their copy of issue no 272 of Model Engineers Workshop? I have been sending Emails (6 so far) to [email protected] but have not yet received any reply. Apart from getting Neil involved or perhaps holding a seance, I can't think of what to do next.
Chris.

Thread: Canon Printer in Aldi |
12/09/2018 11:15:45 |
I have used Canon printers for probably 10 years or more and have never had a problem with paper feeds, in fact they seem to be remarkably reliable. I would not buy the cheapest on offer of any manufacturer because has someone has already remarked you end up paying more for a set of the cartridges than the cost of the original printer. When I wore out my IP7250 I upgraded to a 3 in 1 (MX925) machine that used the same sets of 5 cartridges because I had a couple on the shelf. It is an excellent machine. The cartridges cost less than £5 a set if you stock up with 4 sets from Prink. The cartiridges are high capacity and last a good while. I print 6x4 photos with this machine and people think they have been professionally done. Some people are silly enough to pay around £25 for a single HP cartridge that does'nt have anything like the capacity of the Prink ones. You pays your money ......... Chris. |
Thread: WARCO WM-250 lathe family and WM16 mill - 001 |
14/08/2018 20:19:44 |
Hi Rik. lots of people fit them to take some of the weight of the head. Fitted as standard to some models. Surprised you've never come across them before? Regards - Chris. |
14/08/2018 10:35:50 |
Hello All WM16 owners, Does anyone know the approximate weight of the head on the WM16 mill? This is so that I can get a couple of gas struts fitted to take some of the strain off my arm. Thanks - Chris. |

Yes gents, I think you are both on the right lines but I still can't quite figure it out. It will probably end up stripped down for the bits. Chris. |

Anyone got any idea what this was used for?

If anyone out there would like to donate an Adept that I might refurbish then please PM me. I know, I know, some people will think I need my bumps feeling but the my tablets haven't started working yet. I will now hide under the duvet until the flak dies down. Have some sympathy for this poor deluded soul.

Thread: Cutting a large hole out of plate |
14/08/2015 14:54:04 |
John, Will you stop it! I've got a shelf full of projects in various states of incompletion & each project generates another one or two more projects to enable the one before to be finished. |
14/08/2015 13:37:44 |
Jason, There you go, it works!
Thanks to all for the suggestions. Chris.

John - "so one approach would be to just open out an initial hole with a boring tool until it is big enough. Slow, and a bit wasteful but we are in no hurry are we?" It just seems such a waste of all the metal. I might be able to make use of that bit in the future, & I hate all those bucketfuls of swarf. Learning another technique is also rewarding I feel. Dusty, YES! a great excuse to save up for a rotary table. Trouble is I keep breaking my small slot drills, I don't seem to have the delicate touch yet. |

All suggestions gratefully received and will be added to my 'little black book' Thanks. - Chris. |

Ady1 - Backgear, Yes, the low speed torque on these machines seems quite poor, I have been asking Warco about a set of parts to convert my machine to a VFD drive.
John W1 - "Looking at the shot you posted I think I can see signs of the tool rubbing on the outer edge." - I have radiused that edge but my hand grinding technique is pretty poor and you can probably see signs of my own inadequacies in that department. Must try harder. - Chris. |

Thanks Guys for the suggestions. George - The trepanning tool was a thought but I don't have one at the moment, another job or purchase on the list. Jason - Yes, OK, I am on to that, back to the grindstone & have another crack at it. Cheers - Chris. |

Hi All, I am trying to cut out a 60mm diameter hole out of a piece of 12mm mild steel plate. The piece is set up in the 4 jaw chuck on my WM250 lathe and I have ground an HSS tool to cut a slot. The problem is the tool starts to cut but then digs in and stalls the lathe. I have tried grinding different angles on the tool cutting edges and adjusted the tool height but have not managed to solve the problem. Any ideas anyone? Perhaps a trepanning tool might be the answer? Many thanks for any suggestions - Chris. |
Thread: Lathe shocks |
03/08/2015 07:24:01 |
Can I add my experience of those European plugs. I bought a small inverter welder a couple of years ago and started getting shocks off the case. The euro plug was fitted into one of those enclosing adapters to convert it to a UK 3 pin plug, the problem was the groove that had the earth strip in the bottom of a deep groove had some plastic flashing left in it that prevented the spring earth contact from touching it. I would say the design of these adapters is a bit 'iffy' to say the least. It would be wise to check the earthing of any device that uses this arrangement. If in any doubt change the plug and make sure you have a proper earth connection. Luckily I was only getting around 90-120V from the suppression capacitors but an earth fault on the device could have been lethal. Stay safe - Chris. |
