Thread: Casting brass or bronze
26/01/2016 09:44:55
Btw. There exists kits for casting (brass) using a microware oven ..basically lost wax investment casting with special slip that creates the "crucible"

Mmm..ignoring for a moment the hazards of zinc fumes...

What is the loss rate of zinc...
I mean what is the composition of the alloy if "cooked" for a while...would the notional alloy of copper/zinc reach an equilibrium when the "excess" zinc has evaporated ?..
Brass..horid stuff..usesless in boat fasteners. .you get de zincification..and are left with crumbly copper screws

Watched some you tube.

I highly recommend suburban tools...
A great guy Don.
Who appears to be an accomplished machinist. And educator..
More intrest to people chasing the tenths..in production. .
Like how to check your surface plate
Cylindrical square etc
Well I enjoyed it.

Swapping out the alternator often fixes the problem..
Sometimes not for the expected reason.
To change the alternator you will remove the battery leads...at battery
You unplug/unbolt power and "ign" wires

You un bolt the sad thing
Now the surprise.
You clean the earth connection before fitting the changed unit..you check /set the alternator belt
You clean and reconnect the wires. ...
And test

Hussah ! the new alternator works...

Now was it the alternator or was it the clean /refit of the connectors? ....

Gentlemen.
It appears that you have discovered one of the important principles of modern life.

For example.
Design/ build /test vessel to given pressure both working and safety levels..
Readily achieved. ..

Negotiate "relavent " standards.. ( esp. Identify said standards)...not so easy.

I have this from my day job with low voltage / emc/machinery "directives"...buckets of test houses that will take your (modest ) fee...
But sign off to a directive..nfc..."we just test the tests you ask for. .up to you to chose the test criteria".and make the declaration. ..
* nfc ...relates to low probability. ..

Thread: How does this work.?
14/01/2016 08:56:34
Not certain

My belief is that in part damping and support for the point of the drill...stabilization.

Its old..saw it listed as tip-dodge..in 1800's book..old then...

Thread: Electronic water softeners.
10/01/2016 23:37:33
I would say Woo Woo to this.

But
I have seen water divination work.
Have some idea how/what influence is being responded to but can't prove it

On another note .
Water was considered non magnetic...
Well I have seen footage of water/water containing substances. .supported in intense magnetic field...
So despite the unconvincing "evidence" for these softeners ..we may in years to come know differently.
I will say that a chap at work had a magnetic wrist band...for some woo woo new age health benifit.....funny thing never got swarf stuck to it..
Anyway he felt the benifit...curious I got one from same supplier. .took it apart. ..found no magnets..but there was a void for one...guess the makers found they worked just as well without the expensive magnet and saved a few pennies not fitting them

Thread: DAB workshop reception

Thanks Bazyle.

So the digital bit applies to the wider channel bw..
Mmm
New to me but been out of antennas since fss at uni

We are all wavefronts on this bus
09/01/2016 20:41:40
Baz...
Re digital yagi..really ?

My comment was the fact that all the antenna theory I remember dealt with analogue e/m waves...cant see where a "digital" wave form propagates other than as a fourier series...of analogue.....but hay...what ever.
Maybe I just didn't get the joke

Height generally helps. You might try a 12ft pole outside with a dipole on it that you can rotate to point towards your nearest transmitter. You'll need a coax cable down to your radio and a coax input.

Mmm dipole...rotate..Would be Intrested in how that works? Now a yagi ( tv aerial)..that would help

By the way any one know how a digital yagi is supposed to work?

09/01/2016 11:33:31
SHED =TIN BOX?

Also you mention marginal reception on tv..
Dab I believe is the same broadcast as the tv...so you are probably on a hiding to nothing
Your tv will probably have a high gain aerial ..unless you dab radio has provision for external aerial you are stuck

Dab does not seem to have as wide a take up that the bbc had hoped ( once past a certain limit they get to "sell off" the spectrum)..
Where I live we have what is called.."Freeview-lite"...
Basically less channels. .less dab...lower power...
But just enough to meet the requirement of " coverage" to meet the government targets
Thread: small pump
09/01/2016 10:51:11
Have a care...petrol...kinda exposive...
Just saying..
I would use simple squeeze pump sold for petrol..
Various persons will find fault with home made ( how ever much better/safer your pump is) that doesn't come with the right writing on the side.
Just saying
