Thread: Internet Problems

My talk talk is all over the place.
Swappes router
Filters

Disconnected all "extra" wiring
.

Found by accident leaving land line phone un plugged helps..
My guess an external wiring fault..but apparently line tests out ok..

Just waiting for the manky wire to finally fail and open reach to be tasked to effect repair...

Not to spoil your fun..but

Typography is one thing but graphic design another. ..the writing might be more graphic design. ..think artwork inspired by the written word eg. COKE COCA COLA..

In any case tracing a photo to cnc is nearly automatic.. I use "inkscape".
The work path is this.
Take photo as square as possible
Edit manipulate photo to make square ( see above)
Save photo as threshold detected...basically silhouette. ..

Import in inkscape
Make page equal to desired size
Trace to "path"
Scale path to suit desired output..eg
Using tools use gcode tools..path to gcode
..first set tool geometry...because this is allowed for in the path generation. .

Rinse/repeat
Thread: Steampunk

I think a useful explanation is that it is a esthetic movement. .harking to the "look of" engineering of the Victorian /Edwardian era
Think Jules Vern.
H G Wells
Think brass..lots of brass..leather. .feathers ( don't ask)..
For some reason goggles and Pith helmets.
. Why steam punk...well this evolved from cyber punk ( a la William Gibson) but powered by steam ( for example. .difference engin...again by W Gibson) Another fine read "Harms Way"...what would happen if technology made sailing ships to space possible

I think that was done on one of the confocals using florescence although I could be wrong. I didn't get involved in the imaging side on that occasion. Regarding Fly-cutters they do have to dissect the brains out of the fly. We are talking Drosophila Melanogastor (Fruit flies) rather than great big Bluebottles.

Thread: Lock making
06/07/2016 18:05:02
Locks and lock picking are a hobby if there own.
If intrested many youtubevvideos may horrify just how "easy" it all is..
But locks are an interesting puzzle and build
Thread: What Makes a Good Model Engineer?

Responding to title only.

From observed usage..Myford is popular ( in sense of frequently used)

Along with ( again by observation) ...brass with occasional bronze... ( seems the magpie gene is strong)
Thread: Bridgeport Servo Motors--Mach3 Compatible?
02/07/2016 09:53:59
"Doesn't really like g code" ?

Maybe what you need is a post processor..
I am guessing you wish to "update" your control to get away from a proprietary dialect/interface over to mach3
.

Sure as anything that the original control will have lots of finesse between the servo parameters and the cnc/plc
The "break" between the mmi and cnc and motion control and drives may not be accessible but if it is and if the drives are amenable then of course they can be made to move.
Then of course there are the scales..do their outputs exist anywhere tap able in any "standard" format....

Maybe if the machine works..get a work flow that lets you dribble feed gcodes from a mach3front end ( mmi) to your machine?
Thread: Unimat tools - 6mm or 8mm
21/06/2016 10:37:24
Oh btw.
The reason for "packing" under tools is to adjust the tool height to match the spindles center height...this you will find critical for happy working.
Too low and the part will roll on top of tool.
Too high and tool will rub rather than cut..
Too high is better than too low since under cutting forces the tool will sit down a bit.
21/06/2016 10:33:01
If you use a 8 mm tool..there is little or no room for "packing" under the tool.
That said a 8 mn section will be stiffer

6mm will (should) be cheaper since there is less material. .per unit length

As to indexable tooling...
Well in theory you are unlikely to work the inserts anywhere near there optimal speeds and feeds .
But when starting out (hobby end after years in industrial turning) I found myself using inserted tooling ..I couldn't put up with toolgrinding at home.
One thing. I found the "sharp" tool insert geometry usually supplied for aluminium to suit light machines better than those for the 2mm doc of the heavier machines. .

Thread: Micro Bit bought by Swiss company
17/06/2016 10:20:58
Re. Micro Bit in bin.

I guess this might show all sorts of things about this "project".

I guess no follow up from school.. ( might be to do with teachers lacking resources or skills).
No intrest from young people... to be frank probably only appeal to 10% of them...for most "computer" means "GAMES" console.
Intrest in programming might be ..".create IDEA for APP for 'phone, sell idea to company that actually codes app...make lots of money ..leave school to enjoy said money..ideally before next weeks maths homework due".
Yes I know in reality there are young programners that have actually put the graft in and got to market..but not common and not the perception.
Handing out computers to kids cant harm.
But doesn't provide the fix that the great and the good would expect.

Btw if there are any more in the bin. I'd like a couple. ..
Thread: Which plastic to bond to brass.
03/05/2016 20:32:35
Basically make the joint suit the glue.

From memory the fit on that style of pot is fairly weak..so an interference fit between your "bush" and " outer" will easily be an order of magnitude better than bush to pot. shaft.
03/05/2016 20:27:20
A note
Oily plastics.
polypropylene
Nylon
Polyethylene
Pvc
Are all Hard to "glue"
And any "soft" plastic has problems with peel

This leaves acetal.
Acrylic
Polycarbonate.
These all glue well

And we are talking glue since bonding to metals obviously isn't welding.

Now on to glue line and glue strength.

Tight fits aren't always the best..a gap or glue line can be essential.

For example imagine some thing like an O ring grove in BOTH parts..fill void with epoxy or CA glue..when set you have to shear the glue itself not its connection to the materials..

Thread: Tuning
30/04/2016 14:44:54
Btw...
Tuning also extends to suspension and traction. .
But that is another tale
30/04/2016 14:41:11
Not bikes but.

Dave Visard "how to mod your mini"
And "tuning the A series engin"

Contain much of intrest

In any case tuning for power or economy have large overlap.
Simply put, off the line build will be set to nominal which will work for all tolerances.
Tuning of stock parts aims to get the best of "your" engin..
Now various mods improve your engine.
Better airflow in and out
Shove more fuel , In better mix state to take advantage of the increased air..
Improve ignition control. .timing..
Now chose economy versus power.

Have a care with internal wd...if set too short...the bootstrap "bootloader" code doesn't finish before the wdt resets. ..ie you can't boot load your audrino. ..this doesn't kill it but will require using an ISP to get a fresh bootloader in...
Thread: Linear Brearing Quality?
15/04/2016 07:21:56
Not a criticism of polymer bearings but please note these need to be constrained to achive the "fit" that meets the data sheet spec.
That is to say a carefull choice of "housing" and shaft .

That said polymer bearing although more tolerant of materials on shafts ( to get linear ball bearings happy you will need hardened/ground shaft) ..to achive the speed/friction/service life igus used to recommend anodised aluminium.

Much as I applaud any content leaning to my area of interests. .and James May is not the worst presenter of such.

It is being sold as a bit quirky. .and odd to pay such attention to detail.
This is not the best image.

Thread: 'Hacking' an inverter
20/03/2016 12:38:52
I claim to be no expert but don't induction motors deliver no torque at "sync" and the torque is "generated" by slip...ie that error between output rpm and sync.

For example
50 hz 4 pole..threephase
Thats 150 hz/4 *60 or 2250..so1425/ 2250=63% ie 36% slip.

Any way loss of torque at low rpm...
As said..theory says no..practice seems to say yes.

Might be "losses" in the system that are un accounted for. .fan..bearings...iron losses...?

Minimal
Turn shoulder On rod using smaller hole in bracket
Pien end

Or if a elegant
Counter sink bracket

Shoulder rod.
Drill/tap rod axillary
Screw into end of rod with thread lock.

How to get there requires knowledge of where you are
Thread: Hydraulic Forming

Ah yes.
Mr Furze.
I think he unfortunately comes across on YouTube as a bit "mad" and"zany".
This in youtube land seems to be an asset.
Shame because despite the presentation I suspect that the builds are far from causal .

Yes I was aware of hydro forming turbine blades...
Explosive forming. .yep had to write my name in 1/4" plate using shaped charge and sack of water. Long a go now..much fun that course
Btw did you know ali "toothpaste" tubes have been hydro formed...fir years
