Thread: Surface grinding - Coolant Queries |
06/12/2013 17:13:44 |
Well..I have never seen coolant used in SURFACE grinding...but Others may have different experience. .anyway..the removal rate in surface grinding is intentionally low thus the work doesn't heat up much...if you were to use coolant it would need to be directed to the point of contact of the wheel with the work( or at least when work is being cut..I mean so that the flow is deflected by the work onto the wheel ) thus when not in contact with work allows the wheel to spin dry itself. .and always turn off coolant before wheel for same reason.. On centerless grinding we use 40:1soluble oil..about 1/4strength for turning but dry parts immediately. .high carbon steel rusts almost instantly at that concentration..... |

Engineering brilliance is still present. .what lacks is the ( maybe lacking in those engineers.) Vision and in consequence the backing...I K Brunnel had to convince backers to cough up to fund the builds...as did baseljet ( sorry spelling).Ferranti .and even Watt. Maybe engineers are at fault.."oh thats buisness , I 'm an engineer thats not my thing. "...maybe ( hate him or love him) Dyson ( vacum guy not mathematician) has it right I read a few different versions of Brunels biography and it seems to me he spent as much time in westminster lobbying for different acts of parliament to allow different things to be built, as he did on site most probabily. thats my point.. |

Filament is widely available 1.75 and3 mm in pla , abs less so nylon and even printable wood.. Colours ..too many... Software..host software on pc etc. ( even samsung phones)..generaly needs usb port. Mac widows ( xp and above) linux even. Firmware genraly on audrino or clone. .for open source machines some editing maybe required ( calibration of axis). But standalone operation is available via files run of sdcard. The 3d design side is a different matter software and platform to create the model is mostly a matter of personal choice..but needs one way or another to get to a STL Format file. .which is sliced into a file of G codes which the host software ( or sdcard) provide to the control in the printer. . (Eg marlin)..which in turn controls the axis and extruder/heater and heated bed.. |

Andrew..look forward to hearing of your "travels".. Always intrigued at how you can print at 0.01 resolution with a nozzle of 0.4...I don't seem to be able to make slicer slice finer than the nozzle ... If you didn't know chose un pigmented filament for baseline..pigments seem to effect filament extrusion a lot. |

Thread: bakerlite substitute |
03/12/2013 19:55:02 |
Guys..The asbestos thing is well taken. .. From the vintage of some original bakelite parts asbestos might have been used. One should also note the old machine tool s might have been painted in lead based paints...use asbestos in friction linings and leaded solder in the wiring. The current generation might not have met these materials and be completely taken aback and worse still have no expectation of the presence of such. That said there would be a difference in occasional exposure and occupational exposure |
Thread: Sensor for toy |

Your infra red filtered ( purple ish) photo transistor (open base?) Will be deliberately blind to non ir..thus may be dark all the time..the toy will be looking for light/dark ordark / light changes... caused by movement in front of the sensor. ...you would be fine with a phototranistor with out the filter...btw the original was probably a phototransistor not ldr. ( ldr are now much more expensive to manufactures than phototransistor. ..at least they were to us) |

Thread: What do I need to add a stepper. |
26/11/2013 23:43:54 |
To answet the question as posed 1 stepper/ stepper gearbox combo...suitable torque and size [too small motor even if geared for torque might be too slow) 2 coupling between machine and above 3 stepper driver electronics to suit 1 above.. 4 psu to suit 1 and 3 above 5 variable frequency pulse genertor to signal steps [also knob ]..to stepper drive above... 6 forward reverse switch connected to 3 above.. plus swarfproof box etc.
or..cordless drill ---speed control fwd/rev .gear box and torque limit all built in..
