One other thing.

Some time you buy cheap crap and it is.
Some times you buy quality and it isn't. .

The quality assurance isn't as hard and fast as it used to be.
The main difference seems to be the retailer. ...your willingness and ability to return said crap.

Neil..my guess would be three at 120degree but if not would like to know reason for 135..
Michael W.if I have in someway offended please pm me and I will try to understand where

By the way. .what about wallpaper/cappuccino coffee maker steam generators with suitable condenser

If the delivery pipework is of sufficient bore and length. .it might function as enough of a receiver to sustain the model between compressor strokes....other wise the compressor needs to complete multiple strokes for each model stroke ( and more for multi piston models)..
Again a mains (think electro magnet ) solenoid oscillating a piston of sufficient capacity would serve....

Mad thing is much of the design effort is to meet the regs ( once they them selves are unravelled!)..rather than the real challenge. .*shakes head sadly*

..directed at no one in particular.. (reading the thread i can't find who any way ) ... With regard to moronic suggestions. .there is room for ( in this phase of development) all thoughts ( I have heard "blue sky thinking" used for this also "brainstorming"...)..
If this sort of open ended discussion offends well maybe start your own thread..include a suitable term in title..
As for me..once in a while ..dare to try new ( sadly few are new) thoughts..even you might learn something.

Coffee break thought
.
Platform on "spring".
Bellows( inner tube) under platform.

Viewer stands on platform and compresses innertube..generating enough ca for duration of view ( say 10 minutes)..step off and on if longer desired....
Look ma that demos interactive...

Given.
Pressure 30psi
Delivery (20 cc at 100 rpm)..2000 cc/m or 2l /min..
Quiet..
Prime mover electricity (assume mains)
How about solenoid /piston combo..
2 l/min is 2/3 cc per sec
Plenty of solenoids of that scale without even needing to wind coils.....

At 30 psi 100 mm relates to 170 kg weight on top of piston. .so 110 to 150 mm scales to?.
1.5*1.5 (2.25)..
382 kg good luck with pushing that pump handle down

MichaeG.. (sic)
Vacuum has been generated something like that for years.
And a weighted piston is a convenient pressure source....
And vacuum from flowing water (or mercury vapour)..is another choice..well maybe not the mercury. ..what about running on water pressure...3-7 bar for nothing. .
09/03/2014 21:13:13
The lower the pressure the lower the leakage rates...the only down side to low pressure is the relatively low spare capacity for a given size receiver...
At its limit the motor drives the "engin" like a pneumatic ram rather than a free running motor. .
09/03/2014 21:04:52
JasonB..why not make "dummy" generator and hide motor in that..
09/03/2014 20:38:59
As to the OP.
I had a compressor that was basically a drumskin /electromagnet/ valve

Looking at this..
Say a 100 mm dia.
Average dispacement 2 mm
( thuss 15600 mm3 per stoke)
15cc per stroke..50 strokes per second or 60 If so inclined..

So 47 l per min. .
At 30 psi. .thats 377lb..or 1700N thus work /stroke1700*2mm 3.4Joules per stroke or 170 Watts......any way just a thought

Not for the first time have I thought that a design challenge type thing might have a place in the magazine. If not there then here.

This is already done informally here

Simularly maybe a build challenge from bar stock .. with a limited (estimated build hours) and machinery list..
This has in essence been asked for under the beginners project etc. requests..
In reality home made scribers and squares will
often cost nearly as much in materials as the bought item but there must be some room for small items in the tens of hours range..
And before you all say , see this or that book , the pages of the mag or even this forum might be less "intimidating" than a book with ten projects , 9 of which don't immediately grab one..

That said the books I have I mind are great and often present a "course" of exercises..
Thread: 3D printing seems to have gone quiet. Where are we all at?
08/03/2014 13:20:01
The one recommendation I have is reprint in abs certain parts near the hot end if already made in pla...prolonged use at abs temperature will effect ( warp) pla parts ..
Other than that ..you already know what hot abs smells like so keep ventilated..
Also note shrinkage rates of pla and abs very different
Thread: hardened Stainless help
08/03/2014 13:13:55
Amongst other troubles with drilling stainless. .it workhardens like blases
..so keep cutting and quit when blunt and switch drill..
And repeat. ...

Also for this very task I remember carbide drills being the choice. . (You arenot the first to need to drill calipers)..

Thread: Precisely Holding Long Square Bar in Lathe for Turning
08/03/2014 09:27:17
Edit..crossed with above post I hope I didn't seem grumpy.

In the absence of your actual "requirements"..it is un surprising that my or anyone elses suggestions are off target..

Lets say you want a bar with concentric and parallel "journals" on either end. Of defined diameter.
Between those journals you need flats for convenience. .
You have a mill of such and such a scope.
You have a lathe of such and such center height and between centers

.
Me I might start with square

Mark centers.drill centers ..mount between centers on mill...mill flats flat at "required" locations..mount on lathe between centers and check flats..when happy with flats..
Turn boss as required..
You now have bosses concentic With each other and referenced to the flats. .

This still leaves the issue of blend

But if you do the above with round stock and turn all over you get the flats as required and a concentric part...

Again try replying to the received email maybe?
