Thread: Reader Survey

JasonB...I for one get more chances to snatch 5-10 minutes in "armchair"..than I do get a half hour at the bench (well during the working week)...
Another reason for preferring short self contained articles. ....
I can read an article or maybe two at coffee break or with lunch but a trip to the workshop during those breaks wouldn't even havw chance to get in the door...
..envious of others "dedication"..oh yes

A futher thought...if grinding "masonry" drills..could we grind them for left hand rotation..yes I know the flutes will be wrong but at least you are trying to unscrew the stud..mmm might be an idea..must go and break a stud to try..joke

Tolerance ring?....sort of pleated stainless steel ring....used to "take up" gap betweenshafts (bearings) and holes..haven't seen them recently but RS used to..

Maybe a small hole saw..work around the broken extractor ?..but frankly all the uber hard drills will need a bit more stability and pressure than a pistol drill will bring to bear...either get a drill press or broaching press to bear or I am afraid that you will need to get it on the bench..

Steve tee..as the poster of the " 0.250 or 0.25000..? Moment ".It apears I need to clarify what I mean.. ( yeah yeah again)..
I get drawings for parts..
With say a 1/4" hole
3/32 holes and reamed hole of 0.093"..-0.0 + 0.5 thou..ok sofar..
Now we allknow 3/32 =0.09375..so could drill all the 3/32 holes 0.091 and ream the required holes?..so look at the tolerances for the 3/32..aha fractional dimentions +/-1/64"..bingo..so off we go..but oh no..the 3/32 have go to be 3/32 ...
See what i mean....
So another process another gauge..for a hole that to the drawing has a 1/64 tolerance..
End rant.....

Neil ..not uppity. .
Two thoughts..the interocitor served at least two purposes in the film ..one as a comunicatons device..the other?...
this second ffunctions is I think the most relavent to magpies build. ....btw magpie ..beatiful work..
07/04/2014 22:28:21
Err Neil..Krell....= forbiden planet
Interocitor ( or however)..is I think "This Island Earth"( the one with scientists recruited to work for what later turns out to be aliens ( lead by one called exeter ) trying to fix their own planet)..... Edit to correct title from island earth and interositor spelling

Glad you still have a sense of humour sir.

Gordon.my guess is if after sitting in bucket of rusty water for years..running at all might be a sign that its water proof. .thus its brief flirtation with wd 40..might be harmless..but clocks and locks don't often benifit from that stuff..

Michael..great ..as long as 3d model is well checked first..other wise..an error would propagate un noticed..all the way to delivery..
Seen it happen..
Any way engineer generated drawings are becoming the norm..and until the simulator/cad/cam system also defines the machining technique you will ..as I have..still get requests to quote on parts that the designer has no idea how to make.. ( you might argue that they might not need to ..but)..
I always found dimentions/ tolerances on drawings to seem to take almost as long as the rest of drawing..

Depends on whether youare short of projects or short of time..bet you can get a new pair before you get the bar in to make a pair.

Fractions. ..measure with ruler or tape measure..
.decimals..measure with micrometer or caliper.
...you guess which to use and how accurately to machine..

Best of luck. ..
Btw how much deviation from 1/4" does it have to be before it is say 0.248" Not 1/4"..?..
...I hate fractions used in measuring...it gives me that do they mean 0.250 or 0.25000..? Moment

Indudtrial drawings still exist in fractons but typically they use decimals where it matters and fractions for nomimal ie stock size..
Thread: Parting off

just a hought..part snaps off before partoff reaches center..but partoff will face nicely?

..try sharpening part off blade like

/ rather than -- or \ if you see what I mean...

you will have a pip somewhere but you can choose which has it ..part or stock
