Thread: Worn Myford
19/09/2015 10:53:34
Brian.." bed seems very good, so why is the saddle so worn"..
Not specific to myford ..
But saddle say 70-80 mm of contact...bed about 800 mm ...
Though in practice most travel is over the first 100 mm near headstock. ..
This means even if the two wore at same rate..bed has more length to share.
Any way the bed isn't adjustable un like the saddle..thus can never suffer from "over enthusiastic" adjustment of the fit..imagine headstock end is made very tight..and trailing edge left loose...
All the wear concentrates on one edge of the saddle..allowing it to rock and wear futher..
Also saddle is removable. So would be surfaced with the (hopefully) more likely to wear bit since it could be fixed or replaced. .
Thread: A question for those who have set up industrial machine tools.

That said one short coming of the hardinge manuals.
The usal dodge of taking a final cut with a thumb on the tool post to finish your part..doesn't work..even the manuals are to ridged for that.

Muzzer.
I do mean 10^-6 m
Or a thousandth of a mm.
Could I measure 0.1 um ?
With some of our gear yes.
Routinely 1um believing it to +/- 3 u m on a mick in ws.
The fitter brings his own clocks for thouse tests quoted above...
Effectively clocks reading to 0.005 um/div

These were in effect much more sensitive instrument than used in production ( typically 1 um).

That said one lathe ..hardinge gt sp..worked to 0.1 um
And against thermal would hold that all day
Tool "wear" not withstanding..differentialthermals ccould be a problem...if tool /holder expands more/less than machine..
And if "wear"-change of keeness - changes cutting force thus part deflection...
We delivered hundreds of parts a day to +/-3 microns at a cpk of 6 or higher.
CPK..Capability index...a measure used in statistical process control...

Of course one 20 year old HARDINGE..
No leveling..hardcrete bed..test turn....mmmm is this clock bust?...
No visable move on dial ...
Hardinge...awesome. ..

Industrial machines?

150 k cnc lathe?
Machine bolted to floor. .
Test turned...adjust bolts ..test turn...
Repeat.

Machine display limit ( consequently programed) 1 micron.

True -ness check on installation. 0.1micron.

Re check after ten years...0.2- 0.1 micron..
Some of that might be ground move or possibly wear...35 000 hrs on clock

On an aside..much decorative scroll work is done cold.

Much depends on the section and bend radius required.

In short. .the smaller drum of tge 5" rock rumbler.. will be more gentle than the 14-18" drums of light industry. . ( the machines in the mint are massive)
10/09/2015 10:53:27
Futher observations.

The drum at work had for want of better word..paddles..built into inside...to lift parts/media. .this action I suspect is crucial.
( larger drum also will give longer fall time thus greater velocity .more action. .)

A smooth drum seems to have little or no effect..indeed a friend used to make drums for rock tumblers..re purposed for coin cleaning..he added paddles and an internal diapham..thus making two compartment and allowing two process to run concurrently. .
Thw media he used/ supplied. Was a mixture of short steel pins ( 1 mm or less dia. 5-6 mm long) and what I will describe as flying saucer shaped bits..think smarty having swallowed a ball.. again major dia about 5-6 mm..
This seemed gentle enough for coin enthusiasts.

The say arduino- bluetooth>>>> bluetooth- arduino ( then digital potentiometer) solution. . Radio interference aside has some merit.
One thing to note...the receive software (firmware?) Would VERY much need a fail safe mode when/if the bluetooth link drops out..just imagine turning on but not being able to turn off...

Good luck...

Used engine oil...
Apart from the witches brew poured into the engin..you get to share any unburnt fuel residue and burnt fuel residue. ..
A) an inconsistent start point.
B) all sorts of nasties. .not least from synthetic oils breakdown products..

Best spring for some fresh oil...either a culinary type ( got to be harmless right?) Or a known mineral oil.

Just a hint...a bigger bucket( of oil) will take more hot metal to elevate temperature to flash point...ideal bucket..deep and narrow..part becomes 100% immersed "instantly"..coaxing the metal in is the best way to light the oil.

Intended to build a vib. Unit one day...
Based on loudspeaker power amp. Oscilator
Stainless.can and either apricot/walnut. Shell media. ..
Haven't needed one that badly yet

The one we used at work..
Dry.
Drum about 18" dia. Porcelain tera hedra.thingy. about 8-9 mm on a side.
Parts 30 mm long by 4mm square

Typical time 1-2 hours (at least hour and get that lot out so we can get the next lot in..)
Rpm.. well about 1-2 rps.. so 60 to 120
We also had two sets of porcelain. .one in one being sorted from parts.

Most use vibratory tubs now.
