Thread: Drilling Vise improvements question

yet another tnread form...there are lots... Three "metric"
huge number of " imperial" bsw bsf unf unc lorenstoff....sorry best to say lots.
You will be unlikly to meet many more than two metric (course and fine) ba, whitworth and prob the me (model engineers) threads...DONOT AIM FOR COMPLETENESS that way lies madness..
Any way back to the vice..measure pitch measure core diameter of hole that will give someone here a chance to make sugestion as to what you are looking at...thread form(angle) will also help.

clamp screws...avoiding the V word..are usaly acme thread..the thread form is rectangular unlike the vee form in iso or whitworth...I have seen heavily truncated ISO threads used in "asian" built stuff.

for my tuppence...I drive cnc at work..
I manual at home for the pleasure of the feel on the handles..(tiny light lathe.EMCO SL)
And the challenge of "so how can I do that"

Even going to try the clockmakers method..freehand with graver...
Depends what you after I guess.
Thread: Magnetic chucks on lathes
18/01/2012 21:24:09
with magnetic chucks ,you also need to consider pole spacing...you need to stradel a number of poles in the chuck... Work very well in grinders ,we add blocks to cover extra poles to act as extra lateral resistance

btw how out of round...guess enough to foul

We used to use "gauges" with tenth micron resolution with centerless grinding looked round on them but wouldn't turn between mic anvils.

Thread: Turning very thin bar

any way back to original post.
Like the first reply said... SHARP TOOLS
HSS for when carbide just wont do...!
Oh any cut SS very aggressivly...get under skin and dont let it work harden.
Odds is you 'rod' is wire and drawn thus work hardened...sugest starting from larger stock and turning off outside to get at tamer metal. Say start at three mm big.
16/01/2012 22:07:13
one problem with these " box tools"
They copy the incoming stocks variation onto finished diameter.
Thats part off why sliding head machines use ground stock.
Once had to turn 6.5 to 1.2 mm taper over 150mm.
So far so good.
Stock was Nominally 6.8mm 0.8 mm hole down middle "sort of"
And worst.stuff was poly ureathane..you could tie it in knots....

maybe
smiths metals? Poole 01202893712
RS? 01536 201201
Rs may be better free del.
Smiths cheaper by foot but add carr...
Thread: Laser centreing

ah..diode assy. swings on horizontal axis like pendulum..misbalanced thus "centifugal" force tips diode etc over.
Prefer fixed angle and change "ride height" to change ring diameter...still good idea

Will look into that.

sorry 15kJ and 30s
15/01/2012 19:13:06
pump was half kilowatt so maybe took longer than I remember..1.5kJ/K for can so for 10 kelvin about 14kJ 500 Watts would be 28seconds.

15/01/2012 18:56:46
huh? "adjust the circle diameter by changing the spindle speed"
REALLY want to know how that works....What rpm you got that can cause relativistic effects on say 1m radius.
