And tramming is a two stage process. One to get the table level in both directions and one to set the head. I use a brand new solid brake disc clamped to the newly level table to help with the second stage.

When it developed a fault I replaced the two speed motor three phase motor in my Maho MH600 with a 2HP three phase 1500rpm one and an inverter drive. Wish I'd done it years ago. Bloody marvellous.

Thread: Steering side tube |

I looked at making one but Tony Betts sells the whole thing, tube, cups, end caps and ball joints brand new for £75. It made the sourcing of a short length of the correct seamless tube uneconomic

Three years now mate. Not forgotten and still an inspiration to many.

Yes - a great loss. My ML7 was his workhorse for many years, so it reminds me of him whenever I use it.
In a similar vein the tailstock on my CVA came from his one.

Thread: Wot No Teeth? |
05/03/2020 10:39:57 |
I'm late to this one but I cleaned up the OD of the flywheel by mounting it on a crank between centres. I then held it via the ID with a 4 jaw, trued it up with a dial gauge and just turned the teeth off (as shown). It's easier when the lathe is 1.5 tons of CVA but even so it was a filling loosening job! |
Thread: Handy Height Lift Table |
05/03/2020 10:27:35 |
Anyone have experience of these lift tables, made by Handy height Products in Norfolk some years ago? There are a couple of pictures of them in the archive of Station Road Steam but nothing else I can find. They appear to have made models for lifting larger scale steam locos and sometimes motorcycles. I've bought one but am unsure as to how it's been abused/modified so would love to know more/find an instruction leaflet

Thread: Spurious Accuracy |

I remember a whole module at university about accuracy and precision - and the importance to understand when you need one, the other or both. One pet hate is the idea that skateboarders willl actually benefit from ABEC 7 grade bearings. Your average Bridgeport probably spends most of its productive life with bearings less accurate than that!

I'm proud to count John as a friend over many years in both the virtual and physical worlds. I'm thinking off you mate - I even gave the CVA a pat for you this afternoon. Charles

Thread: Victoria HO Mill - INT 30 or 40? |

Hmm It would appear that your taper is here on Peter Forbes' useful pages http://www.oldengine.org/members/diesel/Tables/Clarkson1.htm And is listed as "1 3/8 NS" IIRC it's also in a wartime BS handbook that is currently Ient to a friend Charles |

I've had the early Victoria flat belt plain version (oddly labelled "MO" not "HO") and the later Elliott badged UO and think that they can be great value in a smallish footprint. Both machines had INT40 horizontal spindles but I've had vertical heads with INT30 and INT 40. I severely doubt that you've been unlucky enough to buy a machine with an INT35. Incidentally the machine was improved by grafting a Bridgeport head onto the overarm. Charles |
