Thread: dore westbury mk2

Like Ian I found the design belt system the weak point of the machine, IMO conversion to Vee belt would be a big improvement when milling or drilling above 1/4".

I only built the head which was installed in the overarm sockets of an old Taylor Horizontal only mill, mine had an MT3 spindle and I did run the geared head but only to check it ran OK, a bit noisy but valuable speeds for some work.

Not the ideal physical size for a motor, most people these days go for 3 phase with VFD for speed control, your motor reminds me of 1 my father had on a circular saw, it was under the bench and nearly always partly covered with sawdust. I think you may just about get your money back.

Hi Jason

In the engine build article when using the cylinder lap you say the lathe is running "slowly", can you please advise the spindle rpm ?

Thread: Ackworthie Tapping Head

Bill

Straight tapers but only short, parallel part between about 1/4" long, both tapers OD as per the parallel part.

Hi Bill

From memory I think the collets were double angle with a short parallel part between and a tubular extension from the back, the end part is slightly larger diameter and a sliding fit to the spindle bore.

If you check the inside of the closing nut you should see the angled closer, the other angle is on the inside of the threaded nose.

The collets are slit in 4 places.

Thread: Bridgeport Circuit Questions

Hi Norm

I don't have a transwave unit but a similar type and run the pilot motor in parallel, the pilot runs continuosly when there is power output from the inverter, there is no load on the pilot motor.

Have you checked if there's an overload tripped ?

Thread: end mill holder
16/02/2016 12:39:23

Hi John

The end mill holder will most likely retain the cutter by a screw locating on the flat ground on the cutter, this type are called 'throwaway' cutters and are usually much lower cost.

The collet will of course grip the complete shank diameter for the collet length.

In both cases you will only be able to grip the 1 size of shank, however some cutters are available on a std shank size with different cutting diameters.

Thread: Milling - Turning Axis Wheels the Wrong Way

You could try fitting travel stops on all axis so your table movements will be restricted to the part you want to machine, same applies to the rotary table, stops can be fitted to prevent overtravel.

Thread: High temp. thread locker
11/02/2016 14:39:39

Hi Tim

The answer to c) is 5BA as posted. Although a,b and d are relevant for a complete specification of the required product, John has asked if Loctite make a high temp thread locker.

Like Jason I use Loctite 648 which I believe is good to 180/200 C, perhaps a search would find something better.

I have already voted for Henry but I'm amazed at the very low cost of some modern equivalents, don't remember exactly what I paid for the Henry but £80 comes to mind and that was yonks ago. Looking at the spec of these machines they all seem suitable for mixed use in the workshop. Like many things nowadays more choice and lower prices all benefit the ME.

Thread: The Workshop Progress Thread (2016)
31/01/2016 22:54:58

Hi Will

I have the same set-up and found like you the foot didn't return, I added a light spring between the elephants foot and the top plate, the gauge always returns now to the same reading. It won't solve the coolant issue though but if you fit an 'O' ring in the top plate bore above the stem gripping point it would provide a seal against coolant, you may then need a little stronger spring.
