Thread: DSG 13/30 running backwards.
20/07/2015 18:31:31

David, it is a sad way to treat machines . The lathe was given to them evidently and it certainly was well equiped, but was in a filth state. Amongst many other lathes in their posession , resided a rather large Craven wheel turning lathe and possibly a second. Lovely place to wander around cheeky

On my own DSG 13/30, the clutch seems a bit stiff to engage, so I thought it would be nice to try a similar lathe to see what the clutch was like on that. Right, found one in a railway workshop near me , so asked if I could try their one. The machinist got it going for me, and thankfully, the clutch was the same. What did surprise me was the fact that the motor ran backwards, so pulling up the clutch lever made reverse rotation. I glanced at the headstock sight glass, no oil. Run one of these backwards and the oil pump wont work.

This turner said he doesnt use this particular lathe much because "the chuck wobbles". I asked if something was wrong with the spindle or backplate, "no, theres something wrong with the 3 jaw, turn a bar , remove it and when you put it back it never runs true again ". I decided not to comment on that but asked why not use the 4 jaw, " oh, its ok when you do that " Im no expert, but he condemned the machine because of bad practice.in my view.

He wasnt bothered about the oil pump at all crying

Thread: Thread cutting inserts
17/07/2015 09:08:17

Hello, nice work there Jason !. Steamdave, I believe with inserts on a manual lathe you still have to creep up with progressively smaller cuts. I cut an 18mm, 2.5mm thread by 5 inches long at slow speed ( 70 rpm) with a partial profile insert yesterday, and the edge of the insert didnt mind !. This was a right hand thread, but I believe you can fit a negative shim under the insert and then use it for left hand threads. Someone on here might be able to verify this.

Friend of mine has inherited this little Exe lathe from his late brother and wantsit to go to a good home, and would therefore like a rough idea as to a fair price . It looks in good condition, so has anyone a rough idea please. No stand or motor unfortunately.

You can run a 400v 3 phase motor off a VFD's 240 3 phase output, but set to 29hz. You lose a third of the RPM. The clever electrical people on here will explain better than I, but the idea, which came from this forum, worked for me.

Nick g, nice job on the backplate !. Ill bookmark the page for future reference. Not wishing to be pedantic though , but some stainless steels are magnetic.

Hello all, went to see a machinist friend recently, and this is one of his Holbrooks. The chuck was actually rubbing on the compacted chips.I know its a tool to make money, but now and again a bit of a clean up wouldnt go amiss !.
