Thread: Record 3.5" vice
22/07/2014 17:23:18

I recently purchased a good condition Record 3.5" bench vice. The mounting holes measure up to a non-metric size. Would M10 work OK with suitable washers and nuts? Are there any drawings of this model in case I need to "service" it at some stage?

Thanks

Mike

Thread: Gilbert Lindsey
20/05/2014 10:47:53

Many thanks. I was unaware of the on-line index! I can now raid the club library for the articles I'm missing, but I don't think there are any more on "Mixi".

19/05/2014 10:37:05

In the way of things I am about to take custody of "Mixi" as built by Gilbert Lindsey and recorded in ME 2nd January 1976. Gilbert was my wife's paternal grandfather, and Mixi is the last of his locos remaining in the family.

I don't have easy access to ME index going back to the 1970s to know if there were any further articles published. Can anyone help?

I'm also unaware of any drawings or further details. Anything in this line would be of great value taking the loco forward.

I do have photocopies of articles he wrote in ME, but I don't think I have the full list. Again, please can anyone assist?

Thread: Attaching name and works plates
13/04/2014 14:46:41

Novice builder here! I'm just completing a 5" steam loco. I need to attach works and name plates (all in brass) to the painted loco (automotive 2 pack). The naneplate could be screwed to the side tanks, but the works plates will have to go on with adhesive? I would need to seal round the screws in the tank sides.

I would appreciate any suggestions or "words if wusdom".

Thanks, Mike

Thread: Loco nameplates
20/08/2013 09:00:55

I'm ready to commission some nameplates for my Polly Engineering 5" gauge 0-6-0 orensterin & Koppel. With diane Carney not supplying etched plates until spring 2014 at the earliest, I'm wondering what other suppliers are around for nameplates?

I'm aware that Polly Engineering can supply them, but would like to consider options.

Any thoughts much appreciated.

Thread: Cutting gauge glass to length
20/08/2013 08:52:23

OK - I "measured twice and marked once" where the cut needed to come. I put the tube, wrapped in paper, in the chuck of my lathe. Tightened just enough to grip. I then set up a carbide tool tip in the tool post and VERY gently brought it in to contact with the rotating tube. Good clean line scored in the glass. Wet the line with saliva and tapped it with a light hammer. Not a perfectly clean break, with about an eigth of the circumference breaking beyond the line in to the work piece. No problem given the pipework configuration. Gauge glass now safely installed on the backhead!

RESULT! Thanks guys.

Thanks gentlemen. I will report back on the "outcome"!

I'm getting close to finishing my Polly Engineering O&K, and need to trim (~10mm) off the gauge glass provided for it to fit. Any suggestions on ways to perform this cut? I do have a lathe (Myford speed 10) and an old diamond scribe, also Minicvraft drill accesories.

Thanks

Thread: Pipe bending
24/06/2013 08:39:29

Many thanks everyone. I have purchased the Chronos bending toll, and a set of pipe bending sprinmgs from the same source. Practice on some brass tube has generated perfectly bent pipe. Today it will be the copper pipes!

15/06/2013 20:01:19

I'm getting close to finisdhing my Polly Engineering O&K "Suzanne", and need to bend the annealed copper pipes for the water and oil feeds. The pipe is ~5mm diameter, and I can only find benders down to 1/4". Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Thread: Lubrication
15/12/2011 13:45:10
After the great help on my earlier post regarding a switch to use with my recently acquired Myford speed 10, I'm afraid this novice is back with further basic queries!

I have a copy of the Myford notes on installation, operation & maintenance. I've got to the stage of wanting to lubricate/grease. Fig.6 shows the various points for attention - however my headstock bearings appear to have greasing nipples rather than oil cups. Two grease guns came with the lathe so I assume I use these (no idea why there are two...), but what grease should I use once these are empty? Also what oil would people recommend for the lubrication? (Sadly) I only have 3-in-1 in stock from keeping my daughters bicycles in order!

As always the advice will be much appreciated!

Merry Christmas

Thread: Power switch for Myford ML speed 10
22/11/2011 08:26:24
Very many thanks to everyone. I have ordered the unit from Axminster Tools, and it should be here tomorrow.

Many thanks for all these suggestions. I've found an NVR with BIG red stop button on the Axminster site (http://www.axminster.co.uk/axminster-axminster-emergency-stop-nvr-switch-prod452985/). It is rated at 13A, so hopefully will do the job. Any final thoughts before I order it?

I have just acquired a Myford ML speed 10 lathe. In very good condition, with many accessories, but no power switch. I'm rather unhappy to run it by just plugging in to a mains socket. What do people suggest for this? I'm a "beginner" in many ways and am not clear what options are available.

Many thanks
