Thread: Darjeeling Articles ??? |
13/01/2012 16:33:03 |
Hiya,
I have just looked at the contents (Homepage of Web site) of ME Issue 4421 and have noticed that the expected Darjeeling Loco article was not included.
Has this now slipped to 1 in every 4 issues (i.e Every 2 months?)
The previous articles were in issues 4419 and 4415 with nothing in the in between issues?
Do you have any idea of how many further issues there are to be expected in the series? (From the drawings I expect in the region of 24 ... which at a monthly rate is another 2 years worth .... if every 4th issue is another 4 years....)

Its now Wednesday the 4th Jan and the Digital Version is still not available!!!! (Diane did say it would be available on the 3rd)
Any ideas as to when it will be available as it is now a week late!!!
(Christmas holidays is no excuse, as it could have been uploaded prior to Christmas and scheduled to be set available on the 28th...... I have other digital subscriptions that were made available (via Zinio) on the 26th so it can be done)

I disagree ...
Deionized water is exactly that - water that has essentially been stripped of all of its ions.
Water likes to be balanced in its natural state, however, and this means that it adds ions to itself to achieve that goal. Therefore, DI water grabs ions from everything it touches that can be dissolved or absorbed.
It is about a close as you can get to a Universal Solvent. In our case, it will extract metals from all of the brass fittings you have, and will also pull carbon dioxide from the air.

I have only seen the issue with the 64 bit version of Win 7 and a 64 bit version of IE ... The 32 bit versions seem to be OK.

I am using 64 bit Windows 7 and IE9 (Also 64 Bit) with no problem.
Diane is Half right.
You have to set the page/site to "Compatabilty Mode" to post -- Its the icon at the top that looks like a torn sheet of paper. (Click it - It will go blue)
Then post away.

Can someone please confirm the dimensions on the Smokebox Pipe Plate drawing. According to the drawing there is a 8BA clearance hole between the 5/16" and the 1/4" holes.
The center to center dimension between the 1/4" and 8BA hole is give as 11/64" .... now if my maths is correct this only leaves approx 1/256" between the two holes. (No room for the head of a bolt/screw/rivet)
8BA clearance = 2.2mm = 0.086" =11/128 ... (radius = 11/256")
11/64" - 1/8" (radius of 1/4" hole) = 3/64" = 12/256"
12/256" - 11/256" = 1/256" (approx 4 thou)
Is this correct .... seems a bit too close to me.
(On the drawing it appeas that it should be approx 5/16" - Mid point between the 2 centers)

Thread: Printing doesn't work |
08/10/2011 18:39:58 |
Gary,
It's a 'Flash' page and Right-Click won't work, even though it gives you the option.
I don't think it is a viewer issue ... I assume David Clark will spot this and respond.
Glad you can print OK now.

Gary,
How are you printing?
I open the issue (It opens in a new window),
scroll to the page required,
click on the page (It now zooms in),
should now see a "Print This Page" tag.
If you click on this, the standard Windows print selection box should appear.
Select the printer and away it goes.
Page 68 prints for me (Windows 7 - 64Bit + IE9)
Do other issues print OK or is it just this one?
Have you tried re-booting the PC?

Gary,
I have just printed Page 16 from MEW 182 with no problems ... Came out perfect.
Ady - In the MEW and ME digital editions you can print, but only 1 page at a time.

Hi 4.7k is 4k7
Also did someone say the switch was reversed. (Closed when Off ... and not open when off) - You won't get one of these at Maplin ... I'll check my spare switch/pot I got from ArcEuro for my Sieg Mill.

Thread: Which 5" gauge loco |
04/10/2011 12:57:21 |
One question to ask is ... Are you happy about building totally from a drawing? or do you need some construction notes, manual etc?
Also take a look at Blackgates, they do the Drawing's & etchings/castings.
If the latter then you should choose a loco that has a set of construction notes published in either book form or serialized in one of the magazines.
Also do you prefer Standard, Narrow Gauge, UK or Oversea's
Also do you have any railway interests? It is better to build a loco that you like or have a soft spot for.
A lot of questions ... but you need to make the right choice, or you will just not finish it.
When I made my choice, I did not want to work totally from drawings, and I like Dougal from the Welshpool & Llanfair loco's (Reeves Drawings), Darjeeling 'B' Class (In ME) and Quarry Hunslet's ..... I choose the Darjeeling 'B' Class ... (I also picked up a Hunslette chassis - No cylinders cheaply so will be building that in parallel)

Thread: Darjeeling Flats on axle for Water Pump |
03/10/2011 17:29:09 |
Dusty,
Yes it's 7 thou each side.
I think there are several options -
1/ Build as drawing and hope machining error, slop etc compensates.
2/ Build as drawing but modify hornblock/axle-box/axle to bring in 7 thou each side.
3/ Make everything that bolts to the outside of the frames 7 thou further away. (Shims?)
4/ Increase spacing between frames ... and modify everything that bolts to the inside of the frames. (i.e Well tank supports, pump spacer, Draw Bars etc)
I think I would rather go with option 1 or 2 seems to be less work, if it don't work I can always put shims under.
Must accuractly measure my frames ... Blackgates say they are 3mm ... a spray of primer would reduce the error

David,
Dusty seemed to think it would affect the valve gear. (in his post of 25/7/11).
I might just bring the Cranks in by 7 thou by tweaking the dimensions of the axle box and the axle's 2 outer sections ... to allow to build as drawn (with a shim) or to bring the cranks in 7 thou.
Anyway David, what is your view on putting the 2 axle pump eccentrics 180 degrees apart?

Dusty,
Thanks for that, I have been building up my collection of bits for the 'B' Class. I have your comments on 'Back to Back' and flange thicknesses saved in a spreadsheet. (As I have all useful comments and corrections)
The next issue I will be facing will be 'Do I make corrections/adjustments caused by the fact that my Frames are made of 3mm steel and not 1/8" (Water-Cut frames from Blackgates), and what do I adjust?" Do I increase the size of the streacher/draw-bars etc or do I put shims under the cylinders etc, or something else?
