Thread: Poly V Belt Conversion |

Fitted the new pulleys to lathe last night and had mixed results when I switched it on. On the slow speed position it was quiet and smooth but on the high range the belt was vibrating and noisy. I will do some investigation work at the weekend. Any thoughts on what could be the problem would be appreciated. I have added a photo of the installation in my photo album. Steve.... |

I have finished machining the new Poly V pulleys and hope to fit them to the lathe as soon as I have found the small circlip that hold the pulley in place. I have put a series of photos in my albums if you would like to view my machining methods. I will post more photos of the completed installation soon. Steve.... |

John, Thanks for your in-depth answer!! I am well impressed. I am sure there are plenty of uses for the laser engraver here at work, I just have to convince my boss. Steve.... |

John, Regarding your laser engraver is it possible to see some work that you have produced with it? I often have thoughts about looking into these but if I ever did get one I am not sure what I would use it for. It's like my 3D printer I made but then I did have a lot of fun making it. Steve.... |

Hi Ziggar, If you go to the Hemingway web site and download their latest workshop catalogue, W180, you will find the Poly V conversion on page 36. Steve.... |

Hi John, The conversion I am doing is for the primary drive. Hemingway also do a final drive conversion as well. Hi Ziggar, You need to machine a new motor pulley and modify the clutch pulley. Hemingway supply castings for these but I am making them from aluminium. Hi Steve, Thanks for the tip about using a tap to cut the grooves but I have ground up a carbide grooving tool with the 40 degree angle. Pictures will be posted in my albums when I start machining. Hi All, Thanks for all the tips, I have started machining the motor pulley and hope to have that finished soon. I have the use of a Colchester lathe so machining the larger pulley shouldn't be to much of a problem. I will post some photos in my albums when it is done. Steve.... |

I have the drawings and Poly V belt from Hemingway Kits for the primary drive conversion for the Myford S7 and I was thinking of using aluminium for the conversion instead of buying the castings. Can anyone see any problems with using aluminium? ie belt grip or possible lack of flywheel effect from using lighter materials. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Steve.... Hi Rod, I had the same problem as you and fixed it by removing all flash player programs, control panel - programs features, and then re-installing flash payer, even then I had to download and install the stand alone version. Another option is to install Google Chrome. Steve.... |

Richard, I made a tool post handle using your spherical turning utility and was really pleased with the result. I have posted a couple of pictures in my albums. From a personal point of view an improvement to the utility would be to have just 2 columns of movemements showing. The X (Z) axis incements and the Y axis shown as a diameter. I only suggest this as I have a digital readout on my lathe and the Y axis is set to diameter. Thanks for a great program and I will certainly be using it again. Steve.... |

Hi Richard, Just tried downloading the spherical program again but it still takes me to the knurling download. Sorry to be a pain. Steve.... |

Hi Richard, Your Spherical Turning Program looks very interesing and a lot easier to use than the Ball Radius Tables I have used in the past. Unfortunatley when I clicked the download link it took me to the knurling program. Is it possible to sort this out as I would like to use the program to generate a ball for a tool post handle I am making. Many thanks for sharing your utilities. Steve.... |

Hi Gary, There is a book that used to be available from Camden by Guy Lautard called Tables & Instructions for Ball and Radius Generation. It is a set of tables that enables you to machine what you are describing with a small Ball nose cutter. I have used this method myself and it does work although having a digital readout does help but I am sure a couple of well placed DTI's will do the same job. You can also machine balls in the lathe as well. Hope this helps. Steve.... |

I use Solid Edge 2D drafting which is a free program and can be downloaded here I find it easy to use and has a tutorial to get you started. You just need to give a few details and then they email you a download link. Hope this helps. Steve.... Edited By David Clark 1 on 24/03/2012 09:36:25 |

Hi Robert,
I am half way through building a Prusa Mendel 3D printer but it is a good few months away from being completed. If you are prepared to send me a STL file of the part you need making I will see if I could machine it my CNC mill. It would be good practise for me.
