Thread: End cutting in mill
01/06/2023 14:15:31

You do of course anneal the copper washers before use?

Thread: Workshop shelving
19/05/2023 11:06:32

At work due to the weight of the items I used , Blockboard, easily took the weight of a spare slide and milling table.

Thread: Tungsten Carbide Tipped Lathe Tools
17/05/2023 11:10:09

As a rule of thumb 150% faster speeds, then heavier roughing cuts. Tipped tools unless small radius tips do not like fine cuts.

Thread: Vickers Bl 8 inch Howitzer cannon of 1917
12/05/2023 14:35:43

One of the problems with separate shell and propellant is that if the shell is not rammed into the rifling enough and the charge is placed, on elevation the shell can fall back into the breech.

The consequences are dire as personell might still be alongside the gun.

I know of 2 cases, one in the Iraq war when an M109 had this scenario and was lost. Another was an M107 in BAOR.

Measuring rods were made to ensure ramming. Plus Hydraulic ramming fitted to guns.

Thread: Myford 254 anti vibration feet
25/04/2023 07:19:59

The adjustable anti vibration feet spread the load on the floor and allow reasonable levelling. On my works lathe I cross levelled one end and then longitudinally the other two.

Worked for me, no exact levelling needed.

Thread: Road bridge weight limits.
23/04/2023 22:03:21

Most bridges will have a Military designation for what load it will carry. I have looked but at the moment cannot find details. tanks and heavy vehs would be routed to miss bridges that did meet the weight spec for 60 ton tank

Thread: Asset Security Marking
23/04/2023 10:05:04

I made myself a punch, using my Initials, reverse engraved on the engraving machine.when used it shows correctly from a male punch. i use this to punch detail on parts that can be punched without damage. for example a bycycle or a saw bench table and expensive tooling. otherwise I scribe the same with a diamond pen.

Thread: Battery powered lawn mowers?
22/04/2023 18:38:15

My long time friend in Australia has a battery powered lawnmower, over the years it has slowly degraded the 2 batteries so much he cannot finish his lawn on one charge in each. His comment that the batteries are too expensive and its a race which gives out, him, or the batteries.

Thread: Simple question (I think)
21/04/2023 22:20:02

Yes, the internal diameter of a precision vial is hand ground to a curve. I seem to remember that a 20" bubble had a radius of 60'.

Thread: microsoft mail
21/04/2023 15:04:28

Look as I might I cannot find, 'File'. anywhere in the Microsoft mail. Lots of other stuff but no setup place, I do understand I have to set parameters to get emails.

Thank you for lads for helping me on this.

20/04/2023 15:51:12

I added Google gmail and that appears but no TalkTalk emails. I cannot find how to invoke talktalk at all?

Thread: Blueing Blues
19/04/2023 17:54:16

Stainless steel will not blue, the only way to colour S/S is acid etch and not always successful. Also not blue colour.

Thread: microsoft mail
19/04/2023 17:51:30

Due to a PC crash I have had to reload Microsoft Mail (The Blue square)

Do I have to do anything to get the emails to load? I am on TalkTalk and have access to TalkTalk web mail, which has no emails .

Thread: Timber and the risk of it causing corrosion
06/04/2023 14:25:21

Tusday morning my Airedale rushes out and immediately starts ripping chunks out of the fence! It is Oak laths nailed to three crossbars, by the time I got to her she had a hole big enough to get her head through! What ever went through the hole she wanted, cat or rat.

The Oak laths were like cardboard to her teeth, brittle and easily ripped up. Luckily I had 2 spare Chestnut laths to replace the damaged ones. Pulling the nails showed rust as Neil said, I re-used the nails.

Next door are petrified of her and visibly back away when i walk past! So I had to do the repair Asp. All the fences are Oak Lath, now 23 years old I really wonder how long the Oak will last?

Thread: Simple case hardening recipe
30/03/2023 15:44:11

While working the plating shop as part of my training there was a process called Black Chrome. The parts were first Copper plated and immersed in what looked like boiling sawdust mixture. Upon removing the parts were then brushed to get the copper plating off, and up came a lustrious black chrome. I later learnt that Browning shotguns had black chrome barrels to prevent wear.

The application I saw was for the internal parts of large gun recuporators.

Thread: How did diesel buses and taxis cope with short low speed journeys in London?
27/03/2023 21:52:23

My Ford Granada had Puegot deisel in it, purred along nicely. but, the Ford agent where it was serviced kept messing with the slow running control. In fact they managed by adjustment to pull it out of its holder.

Also it ate exhausts, I must have welded it 20 times. It went to auction and yes, I got parking tickets from it. Which I did not pay.

Thread: State Pensions - Notification thereof.
25/03/2023 22:14:38

Received notification of the pension rise and then notification of my new Tax code, Oh yes, the increase in the pension then deducted from my tax, allowance leave me with £200 worse off. They would have to raise the Tax allowance to make it worthwhile.

Thread: Workshop Mistakes (True Confessions)
09/03/2023 18:34:14

Not me but a work collegue, tasked with milling a flat on the telescope of a brand new Theodolite. ( Maybe £3000 worth) It was duly strapped down on the mill table and the shell end mill starting to cut when it caught and threw the the Theodolite out onto the floor. Frantic check of theodolite and then reset on the mill and double clamped. Then succesfully machined Much touch up needed but ended up OK. He kept his job!
