Thread: Is there an Android expert in the house …
24/09/2023 14:12:01

… if so, could you please help with what seems to be a very simple requirement, but it has me defeated ?

My cheap & cheerful Alcatel 1S runs Android 11

Where I live is a ‘not-spot’ for 4G signals because the tower is shadowed by a cliff, but some nearby locations have nearly line-of-sight, and it would be convenient to identify them.

Signal Level can be accessed on the ‘phone but is buried under several layers of menu !

Is there any way that I can put a shortcut on the home-screen that takes me directly to the relevant page:

|Settings| |System| |About phone| |Status|

… it would make life a little easier.

Thanks

MichaelG.

Thread: 9/16 nut help!
24/09/2023 13:43:10

There are loads of 9/16 UNF nuts on ebay.co.uk

With or without flanges, and a few interesting ‘specials’

list them with cheapest with p&p first …and take your pick

[ some are ‘stiff-nuts’ … which may, or may not, be useful ]

9/16 BSF has 16 threads per inch and a 55° thread form

9/16 UNF has 18 threads per inch and a 60° thread form

I suggest you need to use the correct nut

It may be of interest to see how effective such graphic work has become …

Look for a report in the Independent on Wednesday 20-Sept.

Thread: ChatGPT - need we worry?
23/09/2023 20:06:39

As a slight digression …

Stephen Fry was suitably impressed [and more than a little annoyed] by the AI cloning of his voice:

… Story available in the Evening Standard, and presumably elsewhere.

MichaelG.

[quote]

Speaking at the tech-based CogX festival in London, he played a clip of a history documentary that faked his voice, without his knowledge. It appears as though the actor is narrating the show but the AI-generated voice was actually created by technology learning from Fry reading all seven of the Harry Potter audiobooks.

“I said not one word of that, it was a machine,” Fry told attendees, as reported by the Guardian. “Yes, it shocked me. They used my reading of the seven volumes of the Harry Potter books and, from that dataset, an AI of my voice was created and it made that new narration.

“It could… have me read anything, from a call to storm parliament to hard porn, all without my knowledge and without my permission. And this, what you just heard, was done without my knowledge.

Certainly, Vic : Here’s 638 but you will find 601 elsewhere on the site.
