Everyone ...

On 09-August, I sent this link to David; suggesting that it might be of interest to the I.T. team

I don't know if they have taken any interest, but I believe the answer to our problem lies therein.

... It's rather heavy going for the non-specialist; but worth a read.

Thread: Stringer EW lathe

Thanks, David ... you are a star !

I must confess that I don't have an EW lathe; but have admired them ever since I first saw these articles. ... If I recall correctly, there are some good "re-useable" ideas in the Exactus series.

Neil,

bbcwildlife ... That's a very cheeky domain name !

[ BBC = Birmingham and Black Country ]

Well done !! . .. I'm surprised that "Aunty" let that one slip through her fingers.

Norman,

Thanks for that delightful interpretation !!

... It's brightened-up my day.

Norman,

For info ...

The icon that "looks like a blue bubble" is, supposedly, a picture of Earth's globe with a chain below it.

[= create world-wide-web link]

The one next to it [greyed-out until you select something that is already hyperlinked] has the chain broken.

[= remove hyperlink]

Here is an unlikely-sounding website that Norman and others might enjoy.

[... obviously not your mug-of-tea, Neil.]

Dave's other obsession is Punk Rock ... but he knows a lot about Moths.

Nice to see the return of the old "message hidden under the adverts" problem.

Etymology of the word Expert ...

"X" is an unknown Factor

"Spurt" is a Drip under Pressure.

Thread: DC motor voltage rating?
15/08/2012 13:03:54

On this Portescap page, there are five ranges of Brushed DC motors in the 22mm diameter.

There are downloadable details for each of them ... so the best bet would probably be to start with a visual comparison of what you've got with what they now sell. ... Even if the product code has changed, I suspect you will recognise the famly.

Thread: Oscillating Spindle Sanders
13/08/2012 13:19:53

Martin,

Thanks for the very useful reply.

I must confess, I hadn't really looked at that manual when I made my original posting. ... I just linked to it instead of the catalogue picture.   [06:27 is a bit early in the morning for me these days]

Can someone please tell me how the Oscillating mechanism in a vertical axis Spindle Sander works ? < Example >

... is it some sort of Swash-Plate arrangement ?

I have a useful-looking motor, removed from a Garden Shredder. enlightened

Thanks

Thread: bending 4mm copper tubing
09/08/2012 23:10:45

Clive,

There is a very neat tube bender, described in photo's and a drawing, here

Clive,

You might find some useful guidance here

... He's talking slightly bigger sizes than 4mm, but the principles are explained.

As I mentioned earlier ... Wood's Metal, or similar, is the best option for filling.

I think the Plumber's version is called CerroBend ... see here

Thread: Charging Lithium-ion Batteries
09/08/2012 08:26:09

Noting Neil's advice ... it seems that the only safe approach is to charge the individual units separately.

Given the typical price of the equipment manufacturers' proprietary chargers; a bank of these would appear prohibitively expensive.

But there is hope: I have just found a very informative datasheet for the SC824 device.

A four-bay charger, using four of these on a common supply, looks the way to go.

Don't know if it's still available, but Record did a "Mini Pipe Bender" in cast Alloy [painted Blue, of course], for tubes around this size.

Alternatively ... fill with Wood's Metal, not Lead; it melts at at about 80°C

Looks like the Record is still available ... at a price!

Thanks Neil ... that's pretty much what I feared.

Dire warnings duly heeded !!

Trouble is, I was planning to make up two "four packs", and that will involve a lot of separate charging.
