Hi Brian
I seem to remember a similar situation about 50 years ago with a KSS Velo, may be wrong but it rings a bell, surprising what pops out of the memory. Neville |

Hi Clive I have a couple of files by Nicholson one stamped black diamond made in U S A about thirty years old and one I bought maybe three years ago but stamped Nicholson Made in Mexico, no complaints about either but maybe the second one won't last that length of time, progress and globalisation? Hi Martin, Would think twice about a freelander, reliability could be a problem, maybe they have cured this with the mark,2. would check on the web in the land rover forums, including the U S ones, seen quotes for ten to fifteen dollars to rebuild engines in discovery to make it reliable over 100k milage, best of luck Neville |

JA In my days as a photographer I used to dip pennies into the exhausted fixer for a few minutes they came out silver plated, we also had to mix the used fixer with sawdust and send it off to reclaim the silver.re"> Neville. |

ahi, I am in the process of making one myself, two pieces of angle iron with holes in each about one and a quarter inches apart bearings out of a pair of roller blade skates, thjese are five sixteenth bore and about one inch o,d. useing threaded rod as spacers come axles, this allows you to adjust tracking for whatever gauge required, the roller blades came from a thrift shop, five dollars for sixteen bearings and eight rubber wheels for saving, and some aluminium for melting down. Hi Graham, We used to rally an Imp in Northern Ireland in the late sixties where you could close the roads and have mixed stages, your remark about the forward radiator brought back even more memories, our Imp was an ex-works with twin DCOE's , forward petrol tank complete with brush handle to dip it as no fuel gauge, with the front radiator as well as the rear the only way to bleed the system was to raise the front up about three feet, wish I still had it. Heard about ten years ago it was still being used oin the south of Ireland for auto tests.Oh happy days. Neville |

Chris, One of the problems with shipping from yhe U.S.A is the method that most or the companies employ, a few years ago my son ordered a computer and had it shipped to my address in Atlanta for me to forward on to him, I explained to him that the easiest way was by U.S postal service, a method I had used a number of times with presents etc. However he insisted on using UPS, we had an account with them so it was no problem. The next call we had from him was to inform us that he had a call from cutoms and excise for a sum of money for import duty. When shipping international via UPS the details are automatically sent to customs and thus the request, when sending by post it is not done automatically, so many times the parcel is not entered into the system. This was the only time I havehad troubles with customs when shipping from U.S.A Neville. |

Chris, the trouble with chains is there is no warning before they go, I would never use them on any machinery, O.K. for steelwork and pipework. Neville. |

Hi Chris, I trust that you are not going to use the shakle on the rope as the pic suggests, Get two slings and put the eyes on the ends on thee hook of the lift, the way you have it the rope is very likely to slip if the load is not evenly balanced, looking at the machine I get the impression that it is going to be heavier at the headstock end you would be much better with slings, these are available in various lengths and it may be easier to have two of different lengths in order to balance it better. A engineer supply company would be your best bet to obtain them and if you grovel you might be able to return them if they have not been used, check it out first, they may have skates for hire if your lucky.I used to remove and re-install ali extrusion presses which are a little bit heavier but the basic peinciples are the same, just take it slowly. Chris, you need to find an extrusion plant that uses a piercer press for tube, these presses punch a hole right t hrough the billet before it is extruded through the die, not many in U.K. now I'm afraid Neville. |

Gordon, If I remember the chain line did not cause a great problem, turn the teeth off the Norton brake drum and sprocket and fasten the velo sprocket on the outer face, the differance in chain width came out O.K. up to 3/8 from 1/4, never broke a chain, maybe just lucky, can't remember if I had to put spacers on the frame/engine bolts. neville |

Neil, you surprise me that the worm is worn and not the gear, usually the worm is steel and the gear brass or bronze and it is the gear that wears. I have had no experience of this box but of the ones I have done on tube mills and roll formers this has always been the case. As regards the colour of the oil in the box I remember one mill that we opened to change the bearings that was the colour of oil, the mill manager when showed this said that was the colour whenit was filled, I cannot remember the name of the oil it is a number of years since I worked on roll formers etc but boy was it sticky, the gears etc were in perfect condition. Stuffing containors is not all that bad if the stuff is palletised and one has a weighscale in the plant, it becomes alittle harder if the machine weighs maybe 18 or 20 tons and is heavier at one end with brackets and things sticking out so it cannot be placed centrally in the containor, we used to ask every one on site for a weight and take the average but it might be a case of shipping a lot of fresh air. If the waggon had not come back after a couple of hours at least you were not over weight, I could write a book about the joys of removing and shipping extrusion presses in various parts of the world.
