Corrour. Know it well.wink 2

I think Bob may be referring to Smallbrook on the Isle of Wight. By no public access, I take that to mean by road or footpath.

Well, thats two then!

Thread: Sandown photos and thoughts on the show
16/12/2014 12:21:33
Posted by Chris Trice on 16/12/2014 10:53:14:

I agree with Martin. I love the show but it does seem to be getting thinner every year. I go for the trade stands but there were even fewer this year.

He who has never purchased goods on the Internet may legitimately cast the first stone...

Not wishing to sound cynical - and certainly not to criticise Chris - but anyone who has purchased goods on the Internet cannot really complain that there are no traders at a show. We can't have it both ways.... Is it not simple market forces? Traders can no longer afford to attend shows. It's the way it's going... for now.
I predict that the trend will reverse in time - but not for a while yet.

There was only one announcement made (I made it). The problem we had was that the lectures were taking place adjacent to the food hall and all announcements interrupted the lectures so the window of opportunity to say anything was quite narrow. On reflection several things could have been improved, not least of which was ensuring the availablility of the Royal Box for lectures - but its non-availalbility was only advised on the Thursday morning. In future we will publish Neil's meetings times in the Show Guide.

Thread: Anyone got ME Vol 41, November 1919?

Great John. That would be very much appreciated. Could you send a PDF to my email address please?

Thank you very much, and on behalf of the lady and her father.

I have had a request from a lady who is looking for something for her dad. It's an article that appeared in Volume 14, November 1919, page 467: Model Hydraulic Rams. Does anyone have a loose copy of this issue? She would like a photocopy of this article if possible. I have the article but mine are all bound volumes so difficult to copy.

PM me if you prefer.

Many thanks

Thread: Me4496 problem
25/11/2014 22:24:38
Posted by duncan webster on 25/11/2014 01:33:19:

Until recently editorial pages and adverts were completely separate, so I could get rid of the adverts when I store the magazine away (I know, get a life). Recently there is a right mismash.

MEW could learn from this as well.

I think (to be fair) that there has only been an odd occasion in recent times when advertising has 'encroached' into editorials' space and that has been for particular house ads. Trade ads and classifieds are always outside of the editorial section.

I often wonder why collectors do this. When I look at old issues of engineering magazines/ publications the advertising is often as interesting as the editorial, from the point of view of historical study.
Doesn't apply these days of course wink

When you receive your Issue 4496 I am afraid to say there has been a printer's error in pagination. The Show Guide, which is printed in full in the middle, has be reproduced in part on pages that should have been editorial. The article mainly affected is Stewart Hart's new vertical mill engine as featured on the cover. This article will be reprinted in full next time. Our apologies to Stewart and to all readers for the errors.

Thread: Sentinel 4wVBT GA? - Or Sentinel Trust?
26/10/2014 00:39:01

Hi Ian

I am a member of the Sentinel Drivers Club and you are right in that their website is probably not their primary source of communications! The list that Jason provided, however, is the place to go. Andy Chapman is very knowledgable on Sentinel locomotives and Richard Nixon is your man for any drawings. The only problem is that you really need to request a drawing by its engine (or waggon) number. Richard should be able to help you. (I wouldn't worry about them wanting you to join, by the way. They aren't like that - it's up to you.)

Incidentally (changing the subject), I have just read in Colours of the Cut by Edward Padget-Thomlinson that there was a steam narrow boat tug once powered by 'half' a Sentinel waggon engine! The text gave no more information than that but I can only assume it meant an engine from Super. It wasn't successful, apparently. The boat was 'overpwered' and ash disposal was a problem. (It didn't say it was a Sentinel boiler!!)

Just to add to Neil's comments, the number of subs issues that do go astray is very small indeed but, if it happens to you it is infuriating. Never hesitate to contact the Editors directly if you prefer not to air your complaint on the forum and feel you are not getting answers by other routes.

... Whereas the installation of gas fires is highly regulated in the UK, there is no control over solid fuel stoves.

I don't think that is strictly true. We had a solid fuel wood burner installed a couple of years ago and the regulations were very tight indeed and the fitter definitely has to install a working CO monitor in the room. I suppose it's up to you whether you maintain it - just like a smoke alarm - but he would not leave without making sure it was working. I don't think there is any obligation to install a CO monitor with a gas fire... ?
