Thread: BORING AND FACING HEAD
19/04/2017 12:04:18

I have just aquired this 40INT boring and facing head,

There are no names or markings on it, does anyone recognise the maker of it ?

It came in what looks like the original fitted wooden box, does anyone recognise the printed logo on the box lid ?

Thanks,

Richard.

What make is the shaper ?

Thread: Milling - What am I doing wrong

In the first picture on this thread, the cutter is not square to the work, perhaps a swivelling head is rotating due to the feed forces,

Thread: Posilock collets
20/02/2017 14:03:23

Hello Trevor,

I would stick with the Pozilock type of collets for threaded shank cutters,

The ER types cant be as secure, just gripping on the shank by friction, I've got some but rarely use them.

I'm waiting to be shot down in flames on this one..........................................................

Looks like a nice project, you could really make an nice mill out of it.

Here are some pictures of a Tom Senior mill I restored a while back, a very satisfying and usable project.

Good luck with the Centec.

Hello Emgee,

On the Tos mill which I cut the final drive gear I have power feeds and rapids in all directions, saves a lot of handle winding.

Thread: SPACE HEATERS
26/01/2017 17:07:32

I've got a 600 sq / ft commercial machine shop, and it's cold !

I have tried in the past a propane space heater , it warms up nicely, but the fumes give me a headache,

My friend has a larger building and he uses a diesel / kerosene space heater, and he says the fumes are no problem,

What does anyone think ?

Thread: PRIMUS 8842 BURNER
21/12/2016 09:34:50

Hello Duncan,

I see what you are saying, unfortunately the burner sticks out quite a long way already as you can see in the following pictures, I would like to keep it all as short as I can, so the engine is as compact as possible, using an elbow or a banjo fitting will do that.

What I've decided to do is, screwcut a brass screw in the lathe M8 x .75 pitch, and then make a "banjo" type fitting that can be silver soldered to the 3/16" copper gas pipe, the whole lot will then attach to the Primus burner,

Sound like a good idea ??...................................Or not,

Richard.

19/12/2016 15:20:58

Hello John,

I understand what you are saying, The burner is already threaded, my problem is getting fittings for the m8 x .75 thread in the burner,

I can get 5/16 x 32 fittings anywhere, off the shelf to fit 3/16" copper pipe.

Thread: PRIMUS 8842 BURNER
19/12/2016 11:22:59

Thanks everyone for your comments and help,

.75 pitch works out at about 33 tpi, perhaps I could run a 5/16 x 32 tap in the burner for about 1/2", and then use standard 5/16" x 32 pipe connectors,

What do you think ?

Richard.

18/12/2016 16:53:03

I've got the recommended Primus 8842 burner for the hot tube on the Alyn foundry 1/2 size Gardner gas engine,

Does anyone know what the thread in the burner is?

Also does anyone know where I can get fittings to connect to say 1/8 copper tube ?

Thanks,

Richard.

Hello Thaiguzzi,

Thanks for the comment, I've looked at your album and you have some lovely pictures of making your tool holders on the shaper.................Very nice,

Hello Speedy,

I usually machine dry if I can, except for screwcutting, then I use threadcutting oil stuff that I brush on as required,

The two milling machines that I used to make the toolholders both have coolant pumps but neither is connected yet, ( a job for another day ).

I find that using flood coolant only seems to make a mess, and gets in everywhere, also some of the older types of soluble cutting fluid were not that healthy to use, I've got some Rocol stuff now , if I do need any and that has no known hazards,

I wonder how many Stuart 10 h and 10 v engines have been made ?

It must be into the 1000's by now,

I made one in 1973, the castings cost me £3.69p.

Hello Duffer,

My old lady is living with her mum at the moment, helping her out, she is 87 and getting a bit decrepid ( her mum not my wife ),

so I might be able to put the engine in the living room for a while,

God help me if she comes home early though !
