I've finally got the Edgwick shaper into the workshop, what started as a quick clean up , oil change and "get going",

has escalated into almost a major overhaul !

The ram has a few score marks on the slides, so I removed it to scrape off any high spots and generally clean it up,

The inside of the main casting was filthy with old oil , water and general crud, so I removed the "slide arm" from the crank, so I could have better access to clean the innards,

I removed the "crusty" old v-belts that need replacing. Spinning the main drive shaft it was obvious the bearings were noisy,

So removed the main shaft assembly and removed the bearings, one wasn't too bad but the other was very "rattley", so I've ordered two new bearings, a set of 4 new v-belts, and a new chain for the oil pump drive,(should be here next week ).

There are two levers for the gear change, each has three positions located by a detent mechanism, one of the detents was siezed up and would not hold the gear lever in position, so off came the gearbox cover to sort that out,

Good job I did ................. as the gearbox had about 1 1/2" of oil, water and crud in the bottom.

I think the whole job will be very worthwhile, and make a nice machine when finished, ( a properly made English machine, made by Alfred Herbert of Coventry ),1950s or 1960s it's a pleasure to work on it.

Thanks Larry, My workshop is 600 sq ft, and it's full !

I recently bought a Kearns S type horizontal borer, and can't fit it in the workshop,

I'll have to get rid of some stuff to make room for it.

Why stop at 4 ?

I've got 3 lathes and 4 milling machines......................if that's greedy who cares

I just enjoy using them,

The lathes are all different sizes, Boxford ME10 , Colchester Student 1800 and a Harrison M500,

The only "luxury" I have is two Tom Senior M1 mills, one set up with the turret head, and one set up as a horizontal mill,

Had some Silverflo 452 delivered today,

just used 2 rods, absolutely lovely, just like Easyflo,

I used it on some heavy brass sections and some 15mm copper tube and fittings,

Used Easyflo flux, and plenty of heat, ( Oxy Propane ) , no problems at all.

Has anyone got any info on the 20" Edgwick ( Alfred Herbert ) shaper,?

I havn't been able to find anything about it at all,

I have some pictures of identical shapers that have been sold at auctions over the last few years and also sold by dealers, but no information.................................

I suppose all the " Alfred Herbert " records have been disposed of.............................( Dumped )

How did it compare to " Easyflo No.2 "

Yes , thats the part I replaced , I made the new one from silver steel,

I suppose the old one could be repaired and kept in stock ,..........................just in case I need it another day.

The threaded shaft with the ratchet wheel in the picture is the original part, you can see one of the broken ratchet teeth.

Ive rebuilt the Sopam boring and facing head, made and replaced the missing part of the auto cut off mechanism,

Also I had to make a replacement spindle and ratchet assembly, as the original ratchet had a couple of teeth missing,

All works OK now.

Sopam say they havn't made this boring head for 20 years, and have no information on it,

Also their UK " agent " has no knowledge of it.

Has anyone got a set of drawings for the Clarksons "Murdoch and Aitken" 1840 steeple engine ?

Anything usable would be appreciated.

The Herbert is a capstan lathe,.................. not much use for model engineering or " jobbing " work,

Perhaps that's why it didn't sell................

Definitely agreed !!

Some people have got too much time on their hands, and worry about such things,

Get down the workshop and drill some holes or something !!............. It would be a lot more constructive.

NO............................... knurling is NOT a health hazzard........................ get a life !............. OR............take up residence in the"Nanny" state

Back to the workshop now to have a cup of tea, and do some engineering,

I dont really have a problem, I was just trying to identify the boring head, It looks identical to the AR18,

I would really like a parts list for it , possibly a supplier of parts in UK ( I think a small part of the auto cut off is missing )

And a manual of some kind would be nice, ( in English )...............Anything really.

Does anyone speak French ?

Unfortunately the lower lettering is partly covered by silver spray paint, and I didn't want to clean it too much and loose the lettering.
