Here's a question for the Stirling engine experts out there,.............Will a stirling engine "scale up" ?

I've just built the engine in this thread, it has 7" flywheels, I have in stock a couple of 14" flywheels and would like to build another engine twice the size ,

My question is will it scale up and run the same as the smaller one, with a larger burner of course.

Richard.

I've just built this Stirling hot air engine , based on the Heinrici engine, all fabricated except the flywheels,

7" wheels, 21" to top of wheels, coke can for size comparison, heat is a small Primus 8842 propane burner,

Runs lovely, water cooled cold end is aluminium, hot end is brass with copper end,

Has been a nice project.

Thread: Southworth engines / pumps

Ordered a set of castings from Blackgates yesterday for the 12" vertical boiler feed pump...................

Arrived today ! ................ safe and sound................within 24 hours of ordering......................

That's what I call service !

Nice people to deal with as well .

Very impressed !!!

Does anyone know if Southworth engine and feed pump castings are still in business ?

I'm interested in the 12" vertical feed pump if anyone has got a set of castings that are unwanted.

Thanks,

Richard.

Thread: Large scale hit and miss engine castings

Scale is relative, do you want a large scale of a low horse power engine or large scale of a large HP engine.

1/3rd Scale of the 5HP Galloway is a good size and a nice build and available from Minicastings or Forrest Classics do them here hasa flywheels of 10.5" Doug at Minicastings also has a few others that are not listed such as the ball Hopper Monitor that was previously sold by Lone Star.

Perkins is not a bad size and quite reasonably priced, Redwing a bit smaller and a bit more costly. R&V have become hard to get but both their engines are a good size. Star and Swan are also a food size. Then there is the Economy from Engineers Emporium which is a good size, they also have the slightly smaller Senior and a "banford" Tulip style engine

Antique Engines has a list of suppliers though a few are out of date or no longer in production

Anson Engine Museum may have one of Alyn Foundry's 1/2 scale gardeners and Graham Corry may have something stashed away, I have had 3 engines from him in the last 18months all 9-10" flywheels.

I've just finished an Alyn foundry Gardner, and I've got a set of castings in stock for their Robinson 1/2 size "X" type gas engine but I fancied something larger,

The 1/3 size "Galloway" looks favorite at the moment.

Does any know of a supplier of any castings for a larger scale hit and miss I/C engine ?

I have tried to contact cooper tool and machine co in Alabama USA, who sold castings for a large ish "Gray" hit and miss engine, but my e-mail is returned as unknown,

possibly they are now out of business ,

Are there any others ?

Thread: Which scale to build
30/04/2019 17:39:10

Hello Lee,

I totally agree with the view " build as large as you can", but don't be under any illusion, large models can cost a lot of money to build, castings, boiler, boiler fittings, rubber tyres , also tools etc that you havn't already got,

Also large models need large machine tools to build them,

I built the 6" Burrell in the picture, It took me 7 years and was a hell of a lot of work, but all worth it when finished,

I cut the straight gears, the largest was 21", the flywheel was 25" , the final drive gear and winch drum probably weighed around 300 Lb before any machining was done,

The castings were from EKP Supplies in Devon, They do a 6" an 8" and I think some 3" scales as well, have a look at their website.

Any help I can give you, please send me a private message, I am in Bucks,

Good luck with whatever you decide to build,

Richard.

Nice job Colin, how old do you think the "Corbett" shaper is ?, it looks a useful machine.

I picked up this Invicta 6 MR , 24 inch stroke shaper last year.
