i dont know about the mcb 100 from axminster but i bought the swivel head model a while back and the build quality was shocking. lots of bits were damaged and didnt fit together properly (even with a bit of TLC it wouldnt even cut straight), i asked for a replacment but that was exaclty the same- in the end i asked for a refund. if i end up buying a bandsaw again it will probably be a well built profesional model

i would be interested too, as most of the kits i have seen need the chips to be programmed

to mount my bench lathe i laminated together 2 thick 8'x2' loft boards, topped with laminate flooring it provides a good sturdy surface to work on. just be sure to use lots of glue ,clamps, and screws
![]() i also made my workbenches this way but with only one layer or loftboard but still topped with laminate floor

Thread: any comments on bandsaws ? |
02/08/2011 21:45:12 |
hi everyone
i am about to purchase a new bandsaw for the workshop and have found a great model of the popular 6x4 band saw (usual disclaimer) it has a mitre arm to allow for quick adjustment, automatic feed and the vice can be mounted left or right.
bandsaw - - - http://www.axminster.co.uk/axminster-axminster-mcb1155hd-swivel-head-metal-cutting-bandsaw-prod719253/
it would be a great help if anyone has one of these, or if anyone has used one, if you could comment on the quality or the capabilities of this machine.
many thanks

Thread: 2 piece collet ? |

thank you pat, i could do with a small gap but not much, as if the collet grips the entire circumference of the pipe then it cant compress it much, i have though about different types of collet but it needs to be able to split as the flared end is obviously bigger, i just fear that if it has a gap and its not circular then it will deform the pipe and then the flare wont be circular for operation 2 to be carried out ( doubling over the flare or bubbling it )
many thanks

hi derek it is a sykes pickavant brake flaring tool, an old one.
the reason i need to make some new collets is because the spanner that fits over them is worn and the thread on the collet is also damaged, i thought if i machined some with standard metric threads it will be easier to replace next time.
many thanks

thanks for the suggestion Les, i don't have a 4 jaw but its about time i bought one
![]() tony, i have a 7x14 mini lathe and a warco minor mill, if i split it after wards when it is clamped up into the taper the inside diameter will not be circular it will be elliptical, ideally it needs to be circular as it is a toll for gripping brake pipes for flanging.
many thanks

hi every one
![]() i need to make 2 more of these strange 2 piece collets and would be grate full of any advice. i think i could cut some bar dow the middle and super glue the 2 halves together so i can still keep it symmetrical, cutting after the machining is not an option.
any help would be welcome .
many thanks

Thread: a source of I beam |
08/03/2011 17:33:43 |
thanks for the ideas people, i will continue to look for some i beam, but if nothing turns up i will try joining 2 pieces of channel together.
by the way its only a model(about 1m long by 7ocm wide) , i may be able to use 25mm i beam max but it is not critical.
many thanks everyone

hi all
i have started designing an overhead crane(the type that runs along girders) and i am having trouble sourcing small i beam, squires sell it but only in 1ft lengths.
does anyone know where i can buy long lengths(the longest i need is 1 meter) of i beam, im looking for some with a width of around 15mm and a height of around 15mm, although this is not critical.
i hope someone can help.
many thanks

Thread: What motor should i use? |
21/02/2011 22:51:13 |
hi
i am trying to build a variable power feed for my lathe and mill. i chose to use an ordinary motor as stepper motors need controllers. i managed to knock up a pulse width modulation speed controller fairly quickly.make your own pwm controller
the trouble im having is finding a motor with enough torque at low speeds(without excessive gearing) and enough of a speed range to get a range of feeds easily.
another alternative is gutting an old cordless drill for the speed control and planetary gearbox.

you could put a keyway onto the motor shaft and in the gear or you could maybe ream it to a push fit and lock-tight it on. |
