Didn't a ship loaded with EV's burn for days when one of them caught fire last week? I think that's the second such event in less than two years. Think of the pollution too.

They're proving to be a real safety hazard and quite impractical when compared with what we already have.

I think I'd try using a wood drill bit - the twist drill type with a centre point.

The video seems to show a few shortcomings in the design of the engine.

This engine has a very short toothed belt driving the oil pump, driven seemingly at crankshaft speed, which in turn drives the anti-vibration balance shaft. This is done in an oily environment with extremes of hot and cold as well as quite high stress.

Once the teeth start to detach from this short belt, they inevitably find their way to the oil pickup pipe gauze and begin to restrict flow. When enough teeth are lost, all drive to the oil pump and balance shaft is lost and seizure of the engine would likely happen soon after.

I don't understand some of the responses to my comment. Are some of you saying that if this engine were made with a reasonably spec'd timing chain setup, then we could still expect it to fail in a similar way?

Why use rubber belts when chains would work without issue?

I noticed an advert for some new Nissan which I think is showing some backtracking from the 'all electric' nonsense.

Their slogan was along the lines of 'Fuelled by petrol, driven by electric'. I had to smile.

Looking for a new car recently, I was taken by some of the Mazda range. I like their common sense approach of keeping the engine & drivetrain fairly simple, with no great emphasis on turbo's or electric, but using traditionally sized, normally aspirated engines, with four cylinders.

That's my idea of heaven.

The best paint I've found recently is Wilko's own brand Exterior Wood and Metal. I've used it inside and out with really good results

Using the Satin version on some new MDF window ledges gave a very nice finish, which blended perfectly with the UPVC window frames. The only thing I needed to do was thin it with water to get the flow I wanted. Simply 'lay off' after each coat to get a very smooth finish.
