Correction that should read Menestheus ! |

Being somewhere at sea off Cap Wrath , MV Menetheseus , Jan '68 , in the worst ever recorded weather in the UK was quite exciting too. |

The actual question was part of my 1961 4th form tech drawing papers , now consigned to the bin. Show how you would make a square of exactly six square inches.

Who remembers how to find the square root of a number with a tape measure, piece of string and a pencil. ? For example 6. Draw a line 6 units long, mark , add one unit of length . Now draw a semi-circle radius 3.5 units. Draw vertical line up from the 6 mark, measure length where it crosses circle. Answer 2.44948 units long. Might come in handy to know one day. |
Thread: Boiler gas burner |

As in full-size , so in miniature. Do not expect the same output from the boiler with the change you propose. The paraffin flame was a different colour to your gas flame and the difference will be noticed in the steam raising ability , unless other changes to the boiler design are made. |

Anyone remember the system Beal were trying to develop , to use the waste heat from a gas boiler to drive a Stirling engine to generate electricity ? |
Thread: UK plans eight new nuclear reactors to boost production |
08/04/2022 08:47:07 |
Even the major news channels keep talking about eight new nuclear power stations instead of eight 'reactors ' as in the first government statement. In any event , our ( UK ) ability to build reactors, boilers, turbines, etc , of sufficient size or quantity has long gone. Houses ,warehouses, no problem , real factories no chance. |

Where did the 'off-the-shelf ' small modular reactors go ? |
07/04/2022 14:27:27 |
We could certainly make coal a 'clean enough' fuel to use economically to make electricity , until such time as the cleaner alternatives could replace it.. However , that is too simple , it is not in the future plans of our leaders for us.

Thread: Is it really a joke |

All charged by the eight 'new' nuclear reactors we are going to build and have running by 2030. Ten if Hinkley C is not included plus the 25GW of additional windmills ............... Any bets ? |
Thread: Why is electricity so expensive? |

Things will get even worse now that National Grid have sold off all our gas grid to an Australian mining co. |

Phil H1 , a nice ex-Flying Fortress, electrically heated flying suit , is what you are looking for. Problem is.....getting the rest of the household to wear one as well . Good luck , and do let us know how it all works out. We all may finish up wearing one before this energy thing is over. |

A 'loop ' pin in each plug with a 'rubber band' through the hollow axle . |
Thread: Rob Roy boiler; help needed. |

As above , plus the correct sequence of 'assembly' is vital , one wrong step guarantees major problems further down the line. |
Thread: Does anyone recognise this model engine? |

As above plus keep your fingers well away because it looks like everything moves ! |
Thread: At last : Some intelligent engineering to mitigate a climate problem |

Yes MG, I did read the article. The 'PoC is, rightly ,just one mile of the 4000. My guess , we'll have fusion before the other 3999 miles get covered. |

4000miles of canal , equals say 200sq miles max of solar panel , equals say 15 x15 sq miles of desert equivalent installation. Now compare installation costs and see why it hasn't been done. |
Thread: British Gas Price Guarantee |

Apart from the occasional telephone call from a girl from 'BG' telling me I cannot service my own 30 year old boiler because I'm not CORGI approved , no problem with BGas. Last gas bill for Feb. showed 3.09p/KWh , six times less than 'electric ' equivalent 24p/KWh from EON.. |
