A last point, for the accountants. Energy from wind is free , yes ? Or, if not free , then after all maintenance costs have been paid , free, yes ? IF that is not the case , then how can any of the Green Policy be justified ? |

I see nothing, yet, to suggest the EU is going to impose the same madness upon the Continent. So, how does that portend for the future of Continental travel in your EV ? Take your generator, transformer ,plug/socket , extension lead with you ? |

To keep the 'maths' easy , about 4 miles for 1kwh, or at 20p /kwh, 5p/mile. Even a modest diesel/petrol car will be 10p/mile . The 'difference' is the tax loss to the exchequer. This will not be allowed to continue. |

Here's one to impress your children. The half times table, the easy way, only 'squared numbers' though. 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 = 2 1/4 Now in all cases subtract 1/2 from first number , add 1/2 to second number, multiply together and add 1/4. So, 7 1/2 x 7 1/2 = 56 1/4 etc, etc.

Ahh, we're back to that definition of a 'engineer'. Anyone can do it for £6 , an 'engineer ' can do it for nothing. |

I think you will find 'the government' have recently signed off on a deal to get EDF to build Sizewell 'C'. Lovely to hear the spokeswoman say, " it will be cheaper because it will be identical to Hinkley and they will know where all the mistakes in design are ". And certain elements are provided by ................the Chinese. I wrote to 'the government' reminding them of where Dunwich is..........underwater. Reassured to know they are already raising the natural ground level to compensate for rising sea levels. |

Worth reading the headline news on the Daily Express now , ref France electricity problems. NOT the silly panic headlines but the intent by EDF to scrap the 4 AGRs at Hinkley+Hunterston starting from next year ,towards the end of the report. |
Thread: Live steam Globe valves |

Pressurised side is under the disc, so that given a reasonable shut-off , the valve spindle packing can be changed safely when fully closed. |

Or the true necessity of those countless millions of journeys each day by 'commuters' into the 'cities'. |

Cars/transport are only the half of it. Wait 'til the gas boiler/oven is ripped off your kitchen wall/unit and the JCB digs up your garden for the heat sink for the heat pump, all at your expense. |
Thread: Myford ML7 faster speed |

I think it is when you're reducing that 1"dia bright you borrowed from work, down to 1/8"dia. between centres. That last cut , when it slowly climbs onto the toolpost and you think, " I wish I had a Super 7 ". |

If you are intending to build something simple first, , then the G1 Project is 'way to go'. NO drawing errors, it will work and is as inexpensive to build as it can ever get.

Thread: Hand drilling stainless steel 3mm thick |

If you are using a hand drill you could try using a 'tipped ' masonry drill, sharpened up as many times as necessary until you are through. |
Thread: Making storage air power out of thin air - new UK powerplant |

Should have added a 'PS' ! It was good to see that inessential ' blackstuff ' providing 2.5% to the grid on a damp November weekend. |
09/11/2020 08:37:10 |
Which all nicely ignores the fact that there is NEVER a time when the output of renewables exceeds the demand on the Grid.

Martin Evans 'Green Arrow' ticks all the boxes except 'size' but at least you will have 'done everything', boiler and all without a huge outlay. Then do the big stuff. |
Thread: Could a Car A/C pump be converted into a compressor |
05/11/2020 11:51:22 |
Really falls to what you want the compressed air to do. Usihg f or painting or breathing air, rules out oil anywhere in the system for domestic applications. Now , what are you left with , diaphragm for low pressure, dry piston for high pressure. |

Sounds more like something Nikola Tesla used to do , I would 'phone your local area electricity board so they can arrange for a bit more to be put on the bars before you switch on. No, please , don't do it. |
Thread: Letter regarding LBSC v. K.N.Harris Challenge |

If LBSC ever did make any of his engines they certainly were not to the dimensions given on the drawings ! KH could have nailed him to the floor with that specification. |

Worst case is +0'010" dia on new axle and bore wheel to suit. |
